Shani Mootoo

Shani Mootoo (born 1958 in Ireland) is a Trinidadian-Canadian writer and artist whose family has traversed the cultures of India, Ireland, England, Nepal and Trinidad. She was raised in Trinidad and Tobago, and moved to Canada at the age of 19.

Her first collection of short fiction, Out on Main Street, was published in 1993, and her debut novel, Cereus Blooms at Night, was released in 1999. She is also a multimedia artist, whose paintings, videos and photos have been exhibited internationally.

Mootoo currently divides her time between Vancouver, British Columbia, and New York City.[citation needed]
