Shanghai Institute of Science & Technology (上海科技高等专科学院) was established in 1959 as Shanghai 2nd Science & Technology School (上海第二科技学校) for advanced technical training. The school was renamed as Shanghai Institute of Science & Technology in 1981.

In 1994, the university was merged into consolidated Shanghai University (上海大学).
