From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ShamRain is a Finnish band which plays slow, dreamlike music, also categorized as atmospheric rock. They were established in 2000 by Kalle Pyyhtinen, Janne Jukarainen, Mikko Kolari and Matti Reinola.
ShamRain found their spiritual influences from bands such as This Empty Flow and the UK´s Doom metal/ Atmospheric rock veteran Anathema (band).
One gloomy night in October 2000, two Finns came up with the idea of a band playing slow, dreamlike material. During the Winter, they wrote some songs, and afterwards recorded. At this point this two-man band was forced to grow. They needed someone to vocalize their scribbled, distressed words, and, luckily, a suitable interpreter was found in the form of Mika Tauriainen from Entwine. In Autumn 2001, this trio shut themselves off in a subterranean bunker, to give birth to the first ShamRain release. Pieces EP, which was released the subsequent February
In 2002 more songs were written, and a full length album was planned. The band continued to grow, as their first permanent guitarist joined. In the beginning of 2003, the band signed a record deal with an Italian label, Watch Me Fall Records. The band recorded their début album, Empty World Excursion, during the summer and autumn of 2003. By that time, the band's music had evolved into a combination of dark melancholic rock and slow, ethereal elements. Watch Me Fall Records put out Empty World Excursion in December of 2003, and it gained plenty of good reviews.
The following year, the band recorded a few songs left off EWE, along with a The Cure, 'Charlotte Sometimes,' which was released as part of a Cure tribute album 'Other Voices.' Some other songs were released as part of a 7" vinyl, simply entitled the 'ShamRain EP,' which was distributed by their own label, UWU. The band wrote new songs during the Spring and Summer; in Autumn, they started demo sessions for their second album, and 13 new songs were recorded. During the sessions a second guitarist was recruited to give force to the band. The deal with WMF was dissolved, and a new deal was made with the Finnish label, Firebox Records. In December, recordings of a new album finally got started at Akun Tehdas, and the sessions lasted almost four months, before adding the final touch at FinnVox studios. The album, which was released to good reviews, was titled 'Someplace Else,' and it showcased new sides of the band.
In Autumn 2005, ShamRain recorded more demos that are to form the next SR release, Deeper into the night. that together with unused songs from the 'Someplace Else' - sessions are to form the next SR - release, 'Deeper into the night MCD.' In the Winter, Shamrain played their first gigs and worked further on developing their album. Deeper into the night was released in April 2006, and revealed a more uptempo side to ShamRain's writing, whilst still maintaining the quiet, slow style that makes their sound unique.
