Shahumian

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Shahumian (Շահումեան in Armenian) region is located in Azerbaijan, in the northern part of Nagorno-Karabakh. Historically, it has been a predominantly Armenian region, it however currently remains almost entirely under the control of Azerbaijan and is merged with Goranboy rayon.

It is named after the Armenian Bolshevik Stepan Shahumian, and its administrative center is the town of the same name.

The Shahumian region is claimed by Armenians as a part of Nagorno-Karabakh, however it was not included in the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast by the Soviet Union.
