Shadyside (Pittsburgh)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shadyside is a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's east city area. It has zip codes of both 15232 and 15206, and has representation on Pittsburgh City Council by the council member for District 8 (East Central Neighborhoods).
Shadyside is home to many of the more upscale stores and boutiques in Pittsburgh including Moda, Coach, and Williams-Sonoma. These stores are located in two corridors; one centers on Ellsworth, the other on Walnut. Walnut has more stores that belong to national chains, including Gap, JCrew, and United Colors of Benetton. Ellsworth tends to smaller locally owned business, including Eons (a vintage store), Gallerie Chiz (a art gallery), and Club Havana.
Shadyside is also home to one of Pittsburgh's premiere independent private schools, Winchester Thurston School and The Ellis School, Pittsburgh's only all-girl pre-K–12. Another neighborhood institution is Shadyside Hospital, a member of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
The neighborhood has a compact layout, which prevents most houses from having garages. Public transportation is available via PAT bus; a busway stop is conveniently located in the neighborhood on Negley Ave between Ellsworth Ave. and Centre Ave.
