[edit] Days of Our Lives

I've changed Andrea Hall to Andrea Hall Gengler on the DAYS page as she is referred to by the married name more often in soap periodicals. Do you watch soaps? We could use lots of help on the soap pages. Mike H 02:36, Jul 14, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Platform

You are linking to platform from the car articles you are creating. Platform is a disambiguation page, so it would be better to link to a more specific article. Platform suggests automobile platform. Note that you can write platform if the "automobile" part doesn't fit into the sentense. Keep up the good work. Thue | talk 22:47, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Automotive Technologies

I'm moving everything from Category:Automotive Technologies to Category:Automotive technologies. Second and subsequent words should not be capitalised in article titles (including categories) according to Wikipedia naming conventions. —Morven 21:38, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks! I've been appreciating your automobile articles too -- there's a lot to cover ... —Morven 07:24, Jul 27, 2004 (UTC)

Love the Ford platform articles! I hope to contribute a lot to them when I have a chance (like when I'm back in school and not working all the time).

In the meantime thought I'd give some pointers on missing platforms, like the new T5 SUV platform being used by Land Rover for the new Discovery LR3 and the upcomming Range Rover Sport (and probably the next-gen Range Rover as well). There's also the Australian Falcon platform (under the Falcon, it's deritives, and the Territory) - not sure what it's called. -- stewacide

[edit] New category for automotive superlatives

Since your specialty is automobile platforms, I've come up with an idea for the List of automotive superlatives that I could use your help with.

The category would be biggest number of bodyworks per platform, with a subcategory for biggest number of bodyworks per platform in the same brand name (not just model name). Restylings or model name changes don't count, and neither does rebranding (on boxy american models of the late 70's and 80's, that rule would have to be bent a little, off course - for truck bodies it would be tricky).

Eg for the category

Fiat Group Tipo 2 (1988-2004+): 19
3dr Alfa Romeo 145 (hatchback)
5dr Alfa Romeo 146 (hatchback)
4dr Alfa Romeo 155 (sedan)
2dr Alfa Romeo GTV (coupe)
2dr Alfa Romeo Spider (roadster)
3dr Fiat Tipo (hatchback)
5dr Fiat Tipo (hatchback)
4dr Fiat Tempra (sedan)
4dr Fiat Tempra Weekend (estate)
3dr Fiat Coupé (coupe)
3dr Fiat Bravo (hatchback, Tipo replacement)
5dr Fiat Brava (hatchback, Tipo replacement)
4dr Fiat Marea (sedan, Tempra replacement)
4dr Fiat Marea Weekend (estate, Tempra Weekend replacement)
3dr Lancia Delta HPE (hatchback)
5dr Lancia Delta (hatchback)
4dr Lancia Dedra (sedan)
4dr Lancia Lybra (sedan, Dedra replacement)
4dr Lancia Lybra SW (wagon)

Eg for the subcategory:

Renault Megane Mk. I (1996-2003): 7
3dr Sport Hatch
5dr Hatchback
4dr Sedan
5dr Break (wagon)
2dr Convertible
5dr Scénic (minivan)
5dr Scénic RX4 (SUV)

Eventually, I'd like to create a list of automotive platforms, that would include years in use and list of models/bodyworks on that platform.

What do you think? --Pc13 23:42, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Automobile categories

Hi Sfoskett - I don't contribute car articles (planes keep me busy enough), but I try to help out with categorisation of what I see coming through "New articles". Having tagged more than a few cars, I'm thinking that "Category:Porsche automobiles", under "Category:Porsche" makes more sense than either "Category:Porsche vehicles" (that would include tractors, tanks, and bicycles) or creating an un-neccessary tier of categorisation by having "Category:Porsche automobiles" and "Category:Porsche tractors" both point to "Category:Porsche vehicles" and having that under "Category:Porsche". Would you object to me doing a re-organisation along these lines? --Rlandmann 04:05, 20 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Pontiac J2000

Hi Sfoskett: not sure what happened here. I thought I'd give your Pontiac J2000 page a nip–tuck as you had 'Category:Pontiac vehicles#J2000' instead of '|J2000' so it wouldn't list properly under 'Pontiac vehicles' under J. After I made the edit, the line disappeared altogether. And my edit doesn't show up in the history—according to that, I deleted the line. Just wanted to let you know I didn't, and it's likely a Wiki glitch—you may know a way around it. Stombs 00:22, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)

Funny, it's there now. Whatever the problem was has fixed itself. Sorry to have bothered you. Stombs 14:39, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Why so MANY capitals?

Why do you use so many capitals in articles you've been creating? It almost seems as if you're capitalizing words just because they appear in article titles? Michael Hardy 17:22, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)

You Asked About My Capitalization. I'm Not Sure What You Mean Exactly... PERhaps yOU CouLd Give Me a Link? *hahaha* No, seriously, I don't want to be randomly capitalizing stuff. Please point out where I did and I'll cut it out. Thanks!--SFoskett 19:03, Sep 1, 2004 (UTC)

Storage area network and fibre channel are articles I recently moved, as are some to which they link. I don't remember which among them you originated. Michael Hardy 19:09, 1 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Metric units and non-breaking spaces

Hi

Thanks for your message on my talk page. I agree that non-breaking space looks better for the reader. Your request seems reasonable to me. My first priority is to add metric units. If I can remember, and it does not slow me down, I will certainly consider adding them. I can't promise any particular level of implementation because it is a much lower priority for me. I hope that is an acceptable response.

Adding non-breaking spaces to units may be suitable for bot assistance. What do you think?

Thanks for the prompting. I learn a lot from what other editors say.

I would also like to request that you consider adding metric units, even if it is a low priority for you. The google converter is a great tool for this task.

Keep up the good work Bobblewik  (talk) 08:59, 9 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Linking to categories

I changed the links because:

 1. They were red - the categories are not populated and had no description. Red links are not appropriate for the "See also" section.
 2. Links to categories are bad practice, better to add the article to the category directly.
 3. I feel its dubious to try and use categories for this. The category would be of extremely low value. Try writing up a List of cars by size.

-- Netoholic @ 15:00, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I see no discussion about car-size categories at Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles/Categorization. Perhaps this issue should be brought up there.

Main article inclusion in a similarly named category is appropriate in many cases. Ford Motor Company is in Category:Ford, for instance. -- Netoholic @ 15:37, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Why link to Category:Ford vehicles in the main Ford article when List of Ford vehicles is so much better, informative, and printable? Categorization is a Wikipedia construct should not be directly linked from a "See also". If it's important enough, than a List of X article is so much better stylistically. This is not about "standard" or "policy" per se, just good writing.

If you want to see something in writing that supports this, read Wikipedia:Manual of Style#"See also" and "Related topics" sections, which describes using that section to link to articles, and no mention of categories as being prefered. -- Netoholic @ 15:54, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Engine displacements

I do see your point; I thought, in haste, you were just giving an identical value in both litres and cubic centimetres. Most manufacturers give a "nominal" displacement that is not at all accurate (and generally rounded up). This happened in American measurements too; the Ford 427 FE-series engine is actually of approximately 425 cubic inches. Parenthetically, I always thought it wierd that that NASCAR 427 cubic inch displacement limit was a metric limit: 7 litres.

[edit] Mazda MX-6 class

(I was the anon. user who edited the Mazda articles... Got a username now). I figured if Honda Prelude was good enough to be a Sportscar, then the MX-6 is too, since they were in direct competition in content, capabilities, and price range.

[edit] GM 3800 Engine

You're very welcome on the last edits. I didn't know anything much about this engine either, until I bought the one pictured. It's one running little powerplant! It's had such a long and varied history that there's still plenty to be added to the article, I think. RivGuySC 14:44, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Rotary timeline

Sfoskett, just want to say great work on the rotary timeline! I mentioned it elsewhere but can't find the earlier comment … Anyway, it is fantastic! Stombs 10:24, Nov 5, 2004 (UTC)

I have a comment about the timeline. I definitely like the concept, but it seems a little inconsistent. You have years going across the top, and model names down the side. So far, so good. But in the middle of the table, you have a mix of model names, engine codes, and platform codes (and links to different types of articles). I think maybe you (or someone else) added the top three rows after the rest of the table, which seems to be referring only to the engines, except for the RX-7. Rlobkovsky 05:47, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Mazda Xedos 6

No, I don't have one myself -- all of my info comes from material I've found on the web. I don't know, I could be more resourceful than average in looking for this info, or not :). But I've been interested in it for a while, since it's closely related to my car, but a more luxurious European version :). By the way, I've accumulated some info on Mazda platforms -- I'll be updating the pages as soon as I get some time. Rlobkovsky 06:45, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Subaru VINs

As you probably guessed you were my inspiration for creating that article. I had found the VIN info recently and decided to follow your example when I saw your Ford list. Thanks. Mdchachi|Talk 20:42, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Redirect you created at "Xk6"

Hi, you created a redirect from Xk6 to Jaguar XJ6 engine, but there is currently no article at Jaguar XJ6 engine. (It may have been deleted since the redirect was created.) Wikipedia policy is to get rid of redirects to non-existent pages, and someone listed Xk6 on WP:RfD If you want the redirect to stay, you will need to create something at Jaguar XJ6 engine (even a stub will do), or else the redirect will go away. If you do create the target, you don't have to do anything on WP:RfD (we'll eventually notice the target is there), but if you do, just delete the entry for Xk6. Thanks! [edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...

 1. ...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
 2. ...all articles...

using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 most active Wikipedians, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles.

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual template (or MultiLicensePD for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual with MultiLicensePD. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know at my talk page what you think. -- Ram-Man 17:28, Nov 29, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Lada Niva engine displacement values

I'm curious as to an edit you made to Lada Niva. You changed instances of "liter" to " L". I'm not decrying the edit, I just don't understand why you didn't use "<space>L". TimothyPilgrim 18:58, Dec 7, 2004 (UTC)

Line breaks. Yes, I get it now. A space could result in the unit being located on the next line while the value remains on the line above. Good idea, I'll try to use it too, thanks. TimothyPilgrim 19:47, Dec 7, 2004 (UTC)
Hi Sfoskett: I feel I'm being a real meanie as it's the second of your edits I've been a bit curious about. Why change at all—in my work I was always told that we should leave it as 'liter' or 'litre' in text? I'm told in typesetting convention, the only time we should use the 'L' is when we can typographically set the script letter—but if it's in the same font, 'L' shouldn't be used. I know it's a pedantic thing but I would personally feel more comfortable with the full word, linebreak or not. Stombs 10:36, Dec 8, 2004 (UTC)
Hi Sfoskett: Thank you for explaining the SI units—yes, that does make total sense to me. I guess if we use cm³ or kW then L is wholly consistent with that. Glad you didn't think I was picking on you! :) Stombs 11:22, Dec 9, 2004 (UTC)
In fact, I agree with you so much I have begun doing it … Stombs 04:05, Dec 10, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] En and em dashes

Hi Sfoskett: Your least favourite fellow Wikipedian here again. Good job on the Mazda boxes and loved your work on the B-Series. I noticed something tiny—this might not be your doing but maybe we can tackle these together when we're going through Wikipedia. I noticed a few year periods where a spaced em dash has been used (e.g. 1994 — 1997). The en dash (–) is usually used for the word 'to' and is unspaced between numbers (e.g. 1994–1997 or 1994–7); the em dash (technically, it should be used unspaced) is used to separate sentence clauses. I know, it's another pedantic thing. I've changed a few where I've found them in B-Series and Roadpacer. Stombs 22:30, Dec 10, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Honda B20A

Your contribution to Honda B engine states that the B20A/Z motors are not considered part of the B-series, because they cannot interchange parts with the other members of the B-series. However, I believe this is a misstatement. In fact, at least one of the B20 motors from the Honda CR-V is essentially identical to the B18B from the Acura Integra LS, but with a slightly larger bore. All parts which are usually interchangeable among the smaller B-series motors, such as cams, valvetrain and valve cover, shortblocks, heads, and transmissions, etc., are just as interchangeable with the B20 (with one exception, in that adding a VTEC head to the B20 requires boring oil passages in the B20 block to supply the oil-pressure-activated VTEC mechanism, but this is also equally required for the B18B by virtue of being a non-VTEC model).

Therefore, I propose to edit the Honda B engine article to reflect this; however, I wanted to inform you of my intention before doing so, since you made the latest significant contribution to the article.

I goofed. After reading the article again, it appears you wrote that only the B20A (but not the B20B and B20Z) is considered separate from the B-series. My apologies.

When I inserted the Ford Activa image, I copied the template from the Ford Laser site, and forgot to amend the '1990'. Mea culpa. Quiensabe 00:47, Jan 10, 2004

[edit] GM or Opel?

The reason behind using the name 'General Motors' rather than 'Opel' is because of the multitude of GM brand names. Strictly speaking the Corsa, Astra, Vectra, et al are Opel designs (Vauxhall's R&D having been merged with Opel's in 1978) but in places like Australia and Brazil, where the Opel name is unknown, they are called Holdens and Chevrolets and are regarded as such - in the case of Australia, the Astra and Vectra fared better than the rebadged Toyotas they replaced. The Astra is a bit tricky because Opel didn't use that name until 1991, and the Astra hatchback in South Africa kept the Kadett name. Quiensabe 00:56, Jan 10, 2005

I saw your discussion with Stombs about this on General Motors Vectra. If Opel Vectra is to be the default page, fine, but the pictures of Opel-badged cars should be given more prominence, as the page does took too 'Holden-centric'- even 'Kiwi Holden-centric'. The Holden-badged Vectra in NZ pictured at the top would not be recognised by most people in Australia, who would never have seen that mocel locally.

Quiensabe 15:04, Jan 21, 2005

I think it's best to keep it under GM, rather than Opel, as those cars were sold in a number of countries using different brandnames.

[edit] Mazda lead for you

Hi Sfoskett: I saw an odd car today that you might have already added: a Suzuki Escudo with a Mazda badge. It was obviously a second-hand Japanese import, and it made me do a double-take. I know Mazda (especially Autozam) sold plenty of Suzukis, but the Vitara—specifically this, a five-door—was a surprise to me. It might be a lead for you. Sorry, I didn't see the model name—it wasn't visible on the car that drove by. Stombs 12:05, Jan 19, 2005 (UTC)

Just in case you haven't found out yet, that Mazda-badged Vitara was known as the Levante. It was available only in Japan in the mid to late 90s and was powered by the Mazda 2.0 L V6 engine. --Pc13 16:28, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Duratec 35

You are obviously well informed on many Ford engine issues. There is another expansion of Curatec 35 getting started for Cleveland #1. Also I am hearing problems with Bharat cranks... just gossip. Thought you might like to cross check sources.....--Pmeisel 02:34, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Just edited the Duratec article. The Duratec 30 will not be discontinued when the Duratec 35 is introduced. It will substitute in some applications. The main vehicles for the 30 will continue to be Escapes, and the new CD338.--Pmeisel 22:08, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] GM Gamma platform confusion

You have contribute some information regarding GM DAT involvement in developing the new GM Gamma platform, but I've found that various sources say it is joint responsibility of Opel AG and Fiat, as stated in Fiat Punto bit contributed by User:Neuropedia. Should we resolve this through Talk:GM Gamma platform or some other means? --DmitryKo 23:14, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

So what engine DID the 9000 use if not the Triumph/Saab Slant-4? Did Saab have another straight-4? --SFoskett 21:08, Feb 28, 2005 (UTC)

Ok, it used the SAAB slant-4. The SAAB B and H engines may be derived from the Triumph engine, but they are far from simmilar. I see that the article on the Triumpg slant-4 also covers the SAAB B and H engines. I would suggest that the article is split into three articles, one for each engine. // Liftarn

[edit] Cosmo images

Heyo- I ran across the image you put up for the Mazda Cosmo—that's great! I wish I had thought of that for other car pages that really need photos.

In any event, though, it looks like we're saved. I've been spending more and more time cleaning things up over at the Japanese Wikipedia, and I ran across a bunch of Mazda photos that Taisyo uploaded there. I've since dumped them into the commons, and they're ready to use.

It looks like the Car article at the commons is fairly active. Arpingstone, in particular, seems to be linking his shots there. I'm doing so in the future, as well.

Anyway, that's about all. I'm moving the Wankel shots over now, and will be linking them in accordingly. There is, in particular, a great shot of a sliced-open rotor. --Milkmandan 05:16, 2005 Mar 8 (UTC)

Here's another one you may find kitschy: the Mazda head office building, presumably somewhere in Japan. --Milkmandan 05:40, 2005 Mar 8 (UTC)
Damn, they are different—I thought they were the same car. I'm going to move the image _2 image later tonight, when I get a chance (and I'll update the Cosmo page accordingly). Can you tell what the exact vintage of the car in Image:1967 mazda cosmo sport 2.jpg is? "Series 1"? "Early model"? I'd like to name the picture correctly. Thanks! --Milkmandan 22:31, 2005 Mar 8 (UTC)

[edit] Most powerful FWD

Thanks. I saw the Pontiac and I immediatelly remembered the Caddy. I've been doing a mental check on most powerful FWDs, and the next ones are the current Acura TL at 201 kW (270 hp SAE), the Volvo S80 T6 at 200 kW (272 hp DIN/268 hp SAE), and the Renault Safrane Biturbo at 197 kW (268 hp DIN). All Audis, Chevys, Volvos and Fords with more than 300 hp are 4WD or RWD, the 2005 Acura Legend is AWD, BMW and Merc don't have FWDs (except small A-Class Merc), most powerful Alfa ever is 250 hp. So the Seville and the Eldorado are it. --Pc13 17:37, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] New Mazda shots

Heyo-

I've run across some more shots of Mazdas over at the commons. In specific, de:Benutzer:Stahlkocher has dropped a bunch in, and I've merged them into commons:Car#Mazda. One of them (323 II) really has me scratching my head—it's clearly not a US-style 323/Protege car, and I'm not sure if it's a Familia branch or what. I'm sure you can find out where it belongs in the model lineup :)

Additionally, I'd like to ask you to upload any of your new shots to the commons, if you don't have any objections. I've been spending an awful lot of time recently moving GFDL'd images from en.wiki to the commons so I can use them to illustrate Wikipediae in other languages—it's an enormous help if they're uploaded there in the first place.

Thanks! --Milkmandan 04:52, 2005 Apr 7 (UTC)

 • I don't know why the photo is labeled "323 II", that car was available in the European 323 range in the second half of the 90s, and it's clearly a fourth generation 323/Familia. The 5-door hatchback was called 323F and was known in Japan as Mazda Lantis (this is the second generation, the first generation 323F/Lantis had pop-off headlights). The "323 III Station Wagon" isn't a SW at all but actually the fifth generation 323/Familia hatchback. You know it as the Protegé5. --Pc13 11:47, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The TSX really has no predecessor. The Integra is smaller than the TSX in terms of size and engine displacement, as well as being cheaper. The Integra's true successor is the RSX, & it's sold as an Integra in Japan.

[edit] Cadillac V8 engine (and other great "technology")

Came across your article. My compliments on the good work, it is an excellent addition to an encyclopedia. My interest, of course, comes from owning a few of these engines beginning with a "500" in a 76 Coupe de Deville that was the last monster (5,000 lb) Caddy but an outstanding vehicle. Followed this with a 79 Eldorado but don't remember the engine. However, have the most vivid of memories of the "future in automotive engineering" (or so the salesman said) of my 81' Eldorado 4-6-8. Took a bath on this abomination and went back down to a "reliable" Coupe de Ville in 1982 with its wonderful HT4100! This one had a disease in more than just the engine and spent more time in the shop than on the road. – End of long relationship with GM, and after the salesman assured me I had made the right decision to quit on Caddys, bought the most expensive Ford had to offer: an 84 Continental Valentino. (Which reminds me to check Wiki for an article). This, of course, was the one with the famous vibrating steering at speeds over 60mph. Disgusted with America cars, I broke my pledge to never buy "foreign" and decided to buy the best -- and the sexiest. Bought an 86' Benz 560SL. Wanna hear about the famous rubber "O-ring" nightmare whose disintegration (like they did on the Space Shuttle Challenger) at high speed almost killed me and who knows how many other owners? After that, I was ready to buy a Vespa -- or walk. Ted Wilkes

[edit] Awesome pic moving

Dude, your "awesome pic" totally buggered the BMW 3-Series page ;-). I don't even know where to move. --Pc13 12:04, 13 May 2005 (UTC)

Well, the picture is nice, but it's too wide, and in IE 6.0, it's on the right of the model box, and takes up nearly half the page in 1024x768. --Pc13 14:44, 13 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Rotary vs. Radial

You added two pictures to the article on rotary piston engines, both of a Continental design from 1944. So far as I am aware, no large rotaries were built after about 1920. I am pretty certain the pictures show a radial as opposed to a rotary. Please read the article in question and decide if the pictures you added are correct, as I'm pretty sure they should be removed.

[edit] Compact vs. midsize in European cars

I've noticed that you've labelled several European cars like the Austin Allegro as 'compacts' when they were originally down as 'midsize'. Is this applying US vehicle size standards to European cars, and is it appropriate to do so? —Morven 19:46, May 18, 2005 (UTC)

Referring to "European market midsize segment" or something of the sort might be a better idea. The Allegro is more of a "lower midsize", like the Astra or the Focus, while the Maxi would be "higher midsize", like the Vectra or the Mondeo. --Pc13 12:30, 2005 May 27 (UTC)

[edit] Car Pictures

How don't car pictures add value to articles about cars?!?!

On this page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrari - there are links to a Ferrari store and a galleria. And car pictures are "low value?" Um, what?

[edit] Innocenti

I noticed all the model links on the Innocenti page pointed to their BMC/Austin equivalents, so I separated the Innocenti 90/120/3C (which had a very distinct bodywork) into its own page. However, I'm not happy with the page name, I don't feel it's quite correct - I've called it De Tomaso because the car was introduced after Alessandro De Tomaso bought the company. With the BMC engines, the car was called 90 (998cc engine), 120 (1275cc engine) or De Tomaso (performance version), but after Innocenti switched to Daihatsu engines, the car was called 3C, but calling the article Innocenti 3C is incorrect, as the name was only used after the car had existed for six years. Any suggestions? --Pc13 12:30, 2005 May 27 (UTC)

[edit] re: The Enzo Ferrari essay

I misunderstood. I thought you were writing History of Ferrari from scratch. If you're actually using content, I will restore the article and convert it to a redirect to that article. You will be able to get to the long rambling content by stepping back through the page history. Unless you suggest otherwise, I'm only going to restore one of the two versions of that article. Done. Here's the old version. Rossami (talk) 13:10, 27 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Engine power

Hi,

Would you like to join the discussion at Talk:Horsepower? You have noticed that I have been updating 'hp' values. The term 'hp DIN' that I used may be 'odd' as you say. My focus was on eliminating ambiguity in the solitary term 'hp' and I welcome ideas for better terminology. For example, the Mercedes 150 kW engine is described simultaneously by Mercedes USA as '201 hp' and '204 hp'. Further errors occur when the hp value is used by editors to convert back to kW. That 150 kW engine example could be misconverted as 148 kW, 150 kW or 152 kW. Take a look at what others have said and I welcome your input there. Bobblewik  (talk) 14:38, 30 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Auto infoboxes

Thanks for taking time to give me feedback on the "info boxes". I appreciate help in getting the layout right. About the "automobile series": should someone edit Wikipedia:WikiProject_Automobiles/Layouts so that it reflects what really should go into automobile articles? I'm using the info box on that page as a template for all my info boxes. —Vespristiano 22:10, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Multiple links to the same article

I generally avoid multiple links to the same article. Sometimes I reduce multiple links. It is almost always secondary to my main reason for editing the article. So I am not too worried when the links are put back. Since you have reverted some of my link edits, what do you think about the issue? Bobblewik  (talk) 15:40, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks!

There are many other car photos to come, as well. Obviously customised cars aren't really as useful on Wikipedia ... but I still have a lot. Thanks for the reorganisation on Commons: good idea. —Morven 07:21, Jun 4, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] RE: Hummer H2

Actually, what I did was I added comments for people who are much more experienced with the vehicle as guidelines for research and copyediting; that is why the <!-- comment --> tags exist. Replying to that comment may have been a mistake, but I'm human too, so please cut me some slack. My comments, frankly, contain merit, and that article is in dire need of editing. Bishonen does the same thing with the comment tags; that's how she helped me copyedit Civil Air Patrol. I do not see any rule against using it in that context. If you're going to remove my comments, that's fine, but please replace them on the talk page instead. Linuxbeak | Talk | Desk 18:59, Jun 8, 2005 (UTC)

Sorry for taking so long to reply. It does look a lot better. There are minor things that I'm still iffy on, but for the most part, thank you and good job! Linuxbeak | Talk | Desk 19:51, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Boston_Back_Bay.jpg

[edit] Cadillac

It looks like you did a false-move via copy and paste, rather than the "move page" feature. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 02:02, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Units for foot-pounds

When I copied the information from the LT4 page, I assumed "ft.lbf" was a typo, but I see now that it's actually a pretty common way of abbreviating "foot-pounds". It would be somewhat difficult for someone who knew little of US units to figure this out, since no search on Wikipedia ("ft·lbf", "ft.lbf", "ft lbf", and so on) will actually get you to the foot-pound page. Do you think it would make sense to put a redirect in from ft·lbf to Foot-pound and possibly link it (sparsely or at least initially) in articles? I'm somewhat new here and not sure that it's a valid use for redirects, but I think it would be useful. —HorsePunchKid 23:13, 2005 Jun 16 (UTC)

A good question. I am taking the liberty of copying the question to Talk:Torque. Bobblewik  (talk) 12:42, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Use of Exotic Car Pictures

I'm glad you liked my Enzo pictures and seeing how Wikipedia needs a few more car photos, I'm willing to let any of the pictures on this page from dscn1488.jpg through dscn1593.jpg be used. These are all from the Scarsdale Concours so there are quite a few exotic cars mixed in. If you find any to use, please ask me before posting them and if posted, please say they were taken by me at the Scarsdale Concours. Thanks! Nrbelex (talk) 05:24, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Just out of curiosity...

Did you label all the cars you uploaded offhand? That's pretty incredible. And thanks for uploading, tagging and adding all the pictures at the commons and here. It appears I went to the right person with them. GREAT JOB AND THANKS! Oh yea - Here's a Workingman's Barnstar to go along with all the work you put in!

I hereby award Sfoskett this Workingman's Barnstar for his work in adding images and info to exotic car articles.

[edit] Regarding Wolseley edits ...

I notice that back in April you reorganised the list of Wolseley models into Four Cylinder, Midsize, Compact, Six Cylinder. I am wondering why you have categorised in this way because the Wolseley 15/60 will fit into both Four Cylinder and Midsize, I find this somewhat illogical. I intend to add the Wolseley 24/80 which is a 6 cylinder version of the Wolseley 15/60. Can I suggest they be changed back to a single classification. Solander 20:26, 24 June 2005 (UT +9:30)

Hi - I made a list of users who've been around long enough to have made lots of edits but aren't admins. If you're at all interested in becoming an admin, can you please add an '*' immediately before your name in this list? I've suggested folks nominating someone might want to puruse this list, although there is certainly no guarantee anyone will ever look at it. Thanks. -- Rick Block (talk) 14:13, Jun 25, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Recent photo additions

That's a great photo of Huntington Harbour that you added (BTW: I corrected the spelling in the Huntington Beach article). How did you take that, and the Port of Long Beach photo? Also: Since I recently added a bit about ham radio operators using the radio room on the RMS Queen Mary, I added your radio room photo to that article. BlankVerse 28 June 2005 09:49 (UTC)

No, I'm not a ham. Much of the info I added was from a recent article on field Day that was in the Long Beach Press-Telegram. I recently tried to talk the Port of Long Beach into doing GFDL licensing for a few of their pictures for the Wikipedia, but didn't have any luck. How did you take the Huntington Harbour photo? I assume that was from a plane or helicopter. BlankVerse 28 June 2005 13:42 (UTC)
After you took the picture of Huntington Harbour, you didn't happen to take an aerial picture of the Seal Beach Wildlife Refuge and Naval Base just to the north of Huntinton Harbour did you? BlankVerse 28 June 2005 15:46 (UTC)
Are you talking about the mountain with the aerial tram? That's San Jacinto Peak in the San Jacinto Mountains. BTW: What camera are you using. I've been looking at getting a digital camera, but the one that had all the features that I wanted had fairly lackluster reviews. :-( BlankVerse 28 June 2005 16:07 (UTC)

[edit] Aston Martin V8

In the film The Living Daylights (1987) has an Aston Martin V8 [3]. I was wondering if you knew what kind of V8 this was. Every site seems to say something different. I've seen V8 Vantage, V8 Volante, V8 Vantage Volate, and also just V8. ?? K1Bond007 June 30, 2005 18:37 (UTC)

[edit] Vantage Mislabel

Thanks for catching my mislabel of the '86 Vantage and moving the image to the correct location. It was an embarrassing error on my part. I had confused it with another photo and mistakenly identified it as a Virage. I do have a photo of a Virage somewhere in my files and I will try to locate it.

[edit] Advertising

Well, "advertising" is one of those annoying words that doesn't convert s -> z (there are a few people who do it, but it's pretty rare—Google gives a ratio of about 550:1 for "advertising" vs. "advertizing"). —Mulad (talk) 01:49, July 10, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Aston Martin

Hello foskett. Are you sure about the Aston Martin used in The Living Daylights? I was always under the impression they used a V8 Volante and V8 Saloon. Wouldn't a Vantage have a blanked-off radiator grill and a much more visible bonnet bulge? JW 21:30, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

Now you're really confusing me. On the Daylights talk page you said the later cars were ordinary V8 saloons which was what I thought they were. We can't really pretend they're Vantages when they arent. Shouldn't we make it clear the two cars seen are a Volante and a V8? JW 14:39, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Vandal

For an anonymous user, something in the last 30 minutes. Otherwise, what are the chances of the guilty user picking up any message? Next to zero. If the user was not anonymous, then I would make the point. But there is no point in doing so for an anon, 5 hours after the fact. Incidentally, may I refer you to point 4 of the instructions for AIV, "If an administrator removes the IP and doesn't handle the matter to your satisfaction, take it to the administrator's talk page, The administrators' noticeboard or Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress, but do not re-list the user here." In addition, we do not block anonymous vandals permanently, because IP addresses are reassigned from time to time. Cheers, smoddy 22:42, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

If you want proper discussion, probably the best place to go is WP:AN/I. As a lone admin, my hands are probably tied. If you see the user vandalising again, don't hesitate to drop me a line. If I'm around, I'll give a lecture. Cheers, smoddy 22:49, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Duplication of plant names

It appears that you (or someone) may have accidently duplicated a group of the ford plant names on either May 7 or May 13, 2005.

[edit] You have been nominated

You've made a number of great improvements to Wikipedia, and I believe that administrative privileges would only enhance your ability to contribute. So if you do not mind, I have taken the initiative to nominate you for adminship. :-) Now go do something about it. Hall Monitor 21:13, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

 • By the way, should you wish to accept, please see Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/nominate#What_to_do_if_you_are_nominated: as there have been some slight changes to the WP:RFA process. Best regards, Hall Monitor 21:35, 13 October 2005 (UTC)
 • Hi Stephen. It has been almost a week since I drafted Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Sfoskett but you still have not responded to your nomination. Are you not interested in receiving adminship? If not, please let me know and I will cancel this nomination. You are a valuable contributor to Wikipedia who I believe would find benefit in the privileges granted to administrators, but the first step towards receiving them is signing your acceptance. :) If you have any questions regarding this process, please do not hesitate to contact me on my talk page or via e-mail. Best regards, Hall Monitor 22:41, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hey that's my car!

It was startling to click on the Audi S6 page and see a picture of my car, taken outside my office building. Talk about a small world!

By the way, it's actually a 1994 S4, a.k.a. "ur-S4". Emerald green seems to be by far the most common color for these rare cars, so in that sense it's a very representative picture. The S6 has body-colored bumpers and side molding, in contrast to the black strips on the S4. Kday 02:35, 14 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] You're a sysop!

Hi, Sfoskett/Archive, Congratulations on Becoming a Sysop

Hey there. I'm pleased to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator! You've volunteered to do housekeeping duties that normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops can't do a lot of stuff: They can't delete pages just like that (except patent nonsense like "aojt9085yu8;3ou"), and they can't protect pages in an edit war they are involved in. But they can delete random junk, ban anonymous vandals, delete pages listed on Votes for deletion (provided there's a consensus) for more than one week, protect pages when asked to, and keep the few protected pages that exist on Wikipedia up to date.

Almost anything you can do can be undone, but please take a look at The Administrators' how-to guide and the Administrators' reading list before you get started (although you should have read that during your candidacy ;). Take a look before experimenting with your powers. Also, please add Administrators' noticeboard to your watchlist, as there are always discussions/requests for admins there. If you have any questions drop me a message at My talk page. Have fun! =Nichalp «Talk»=

Are you sure the SX4 is going to be available in the US? I know the car is being developed specifically for the European market, and that it will replace the Liana (Aerio). I kept the specs for the American SX4 in the page, but I can't find a Suzuki US press-release talking about the car.

On a tangential side-note, I've expanded the Simca 1100 engine a bit. I found out it was called Simca Type 315. Do you think we should rename it accordingly? Pc13 09:57, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Ford Duratorq

Hi, Stephen. I've noticed your recent updates (I have to admit, I'm a bit of a stalker. Whenever I feel like looking for potential automotive articles to update, I check your contributions to see if there's anything I can add) to the Ford Duratorq engine page, and I have some corrections to report. I can do them on saturday, if you don't have time till then.

First, the DLDs aren't generally non-intercooled. The 1.4L engine is non-intercooled, but only in the regular turbo 8-valve version. The 90/92PS 16-valve design is intercooled and uses a variable nozzle turbo, but it'll disappear soon as it can't pass Euro 4 emission regulations. The 1.6L is only available in intercooled 16-valve VNT form. The 1.8L isn't related to this design at all, it's an update of the Endura engine.

Then, there's a big mess with the ZSD design applications. First, the 2.0L 8-valve 90/110PS versions as found in several Citroen and Peugeot models are 100% genuine PSA designs, part of the Peugeot EW/DW family, and predate the Ford/PSA partnership. The 136PS 16-valve version is a ZSD but uses the same cylinder casings (85*88mm) as the Peugeot, hence the confusion.

Next, the 2.0L used in the Transit and Mondeo is not the same engine as the Ford/PSA cooperation, it's a different design with 86*86mm bore and stroke, it debuted in passenger cars with the current Mondeo and predates the Ford/PSA partnership.

The 2.2L PSA/Ford has yet to make its debut, it'll happen around mid-2006. The Peugeot/Citroen models use the Peugeot DW12 engine (2179cc, 85*96mm), and the Mondeo and Jaguar X-Type use an enlarged version of the Transit/Mondeo engine (2184cc, 86*94mm), so they're completely unrelated. The 2.4L is based on this design and not part of the Ford/PSA partnership either.

Speaking of Peugeot engines, I managed to find info on the modern families of Peugeot engines (X, TU, XU, EW/DW and ES). I'll add them saturday. --Pc13 00:35, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
