SF is a two-letter abbreviation which may refer to:

• San Francisco, California, a city with a population of more than 730,000, located on the West Coast of the United States.
  • The San Francisco Giants, a franchise in the MLB
  • The San Francisco 49ers, a franchise in the NFL
• Sinn Féin, Irish political party with links with the IRA.
• Schweizer Fernsehen (Swiss Television)
• Science fiction, a literary genre ("Speculative fiction" is sometimes abbreviated "spec-fic," "S-F," "SF," or "sf." Care with context is needed in the use of such shorthand, as these last three abbreviations are more commonly used to mean just "science fiction", a subgenre by today's reckoning, wherein a (ideally) single science principle is altered and a story extrapolated (around the new physics) milieu is thus crafted. Good science fiction contains much good science and technology.
• Scuderia Ferrari, the racing division of the Ferrari automobile company

• Special forces - small, highly trained and specialised military units
• Speculative fiction, term coined by Robert A. Heinlein as a synonym for science fiction, but which has been broadened subsequently— a literary genre which now is meant to include Science Fiction as but one of its subgenre. (See above caution note above under Science Fiction. 'SF' is the prefered abbreviation within the Science Fiction community for the subgenre, and one in long use. Use to mean the broader Speculative Fiction, will occasionally meet near-militant opposition and scorn!)

Former (now defunct) uses of SF include:

• Finland as an abbreviation for "Suomi-Finland". ("Suomi" is the Finnish name for Finland.)
• Suomen Filmiteollisuus, a Finnish film production company, was abbreviated SF.
• the Hull classification symbol for a "Fleet Submarine" in the United States Navy
