Seymour, Victoria
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Seymour is a town in the state of Victoria, Australia, located 97 kilometres to the north of Melbourne. It was established in 1839 at the crossing of the Goulburn River on the Melbourne-Sydney route where an inn was first built. The railway arrived in 1872 along with substantial infrastructure to support it, and the town became the major rail intersection for The Goulburn Valley and North East Victoria.
Its population of 7000 people service the nearby military base of Puckapunyal (which is an important training centre for the Australian Army) and the surrounding agricultural industries, primarily sheep, cattle and wine production. Its location near the Hume Freeway and frequent trains allow many people to work and study in Melbourne and commute to a rural lifestyle each day.
The nearby military township of Puckapunyal is the centre for the Australian Army's Land Warfare Development Centre and Headquarters Combined Arms Training Centre (HQ CATC). The HQ CATC is the headquarters for the Australian Army School of Armour (Puckapunyal), School of Artillery (Puckapunyal), School of Engineers (Sydney) and School of Infantry (Singleton).
The township is well serviced with retail, medical, and educational facilities. A number of service and community organisations are active in Seymour including Lions, Scouting, Apex and Freemasonry which was established in the township in 1883.
