Hi - nowhere that I know of as such but Special:Newpages will show you what has been started recently. As to cats - it's just a pet thing of mine - far easier for readers to find things if they are categorised. I was watching recent changes and when I see something that interests me I tend to go look!
As a ps on cats - bear in mind with the correct page naming for a book (subpages being /subpage) you need to pipe (|) the subpage name to get correct alpha cats.
