Sexy football

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sexy football is a term coined by Ruud Gullit as a football pundit on BBC television during the European Championship finals of 1996. [1].

Gullit used the term to describe teams who played attractive football with an emphasis on the passing game.

The term became associated with Gullit's Chelsea side in the late 1990s who played an attractive, open style of play, led by non-English stars such as Gullit himself, Gianluca Vialli, Gianfranco Zola, Roberto Di Matteo and Gustavo Poyet. The term 'sexy football' is now used to refer to an attacking, attractive style of play which puts a greater emphasis on scoring goals and creating goal-scoring chances than any other aspect of play. Keeping possession of the ball is also a key component of 'sexy football'. FC Barcelona currently play sexy football, led by talismanic Brazilian Ronaldinho.
