"SexyBack" is a pop-hip hop song written and performed by the American singers Justin Timberlake and Timbaland for Timberlake's sophomore album FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006). It was produced by Timbaland and Danja and released as the album's first single on July 7, 2006. "SexyBack" is, to date, Timberlake's most successful single in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States, reaching the number one spot in all of these countries.

The song features Timbaland producing and providing additional vocals [1].

As of October 21, "SexyBack" is the longest-running number one single of 2006 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, staying seven weeks at the top [2].

[edit] Song information

The track is produced and co-written by Timbaland and Nate Hills. The vocals on the track vary from those on Timberlake's earlier works; Timberlake's voice has been altered here through simply adding distortion to the vocals. Timbaland also does vocals in the background, and the music video is credited to Justin Timberlake featuring Timbaland.

A short clip of "SexyBack" was made available on the Internet on June 21, 2006. The full song was released for online play on July 6, 2006, and made available for listening on Justin Timberlake's official MySpace page [3].

Newsday named "SexyBack" song of the week and called it "a stunner, a bold, new mix of Basement Jaxx-styled dance music and Timbaland's spacey hip-hop."[4]

The music video for "SexyBack" was shot in a luxury building of Barcelona, Spain, and features the Spanish actress Elena Anaya (from the 2001 film Sex and Lucía).

Originally, director Michael Haussman wanted to feature French actress Eva Green, but she declined twice. [citation needed]

The music video for the song is said to be inspired by the video for Madonna's "Take a Bow," (and in fact contains much similar imagery) also directed by Haussman. Timberlake said that he liked the dark visual that Madonna showed on her video, and that's why he was inspired by her. The video was first shown on MTV's Making the Video on July 25.

[edit] Trivia

  • The saying "bringing SexyBack" has become somewhat of a catchphrase since the song came out. It was heavily used at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards. Al Gore, for example, said he wouldn't have come to the VMA's at first but then he heard that "Justin Timberlake is bringing SexyBack". Lil Kim and Jared Leto also said they were "bringing SexyBack" during the show. Also, while hyping his debut on ECW, professional wrestler Shannon Moore made a reference to the song when he quoted "I'm the Prince of Punk and I'm bringing SexyBack!" [5]
  • The song became so popular that many parodies were made, such as "Paxilback" by The Gray Kid, "ChubbyBack" by a local DJ in Kansas City, Missouri, "DavidBack" by Luke Wojtulewicz and Marcin Michalski, and a parody done by Gary Dell'Abate.
  • On the September 12th episode of TRL, Justin commented on the catchphrase "bringing SexyBack", saying he somewhat regrets writing it now, since he hears it everywhere, similar to Destiny's Child's song "Bootylicious" a few years ago. He also commented on the heavy use of it at the VMA's saying some of the people used the phrase out of context, but didn't single them out. VJ Damien Fahey said the whole album was kind of associated with the phrase now, asking him if that was for better or worse, and Timberlake overall said that it was for the better.
  • On Miami's NBC6 news station, meteorologist Trina Robinson was dancing to "SexyBack", unknown to her that the cameras were rolling. The sports reporter Joe Rose was dancing as well, but to Black Eyed Peas' "Let's Get It Started". This has created an Internet phenomenon in the Miami-Dade County area [6]. The videos were later revealed as being stunt promos for the station, and caused the viewers to feel awkward and embarrassed for the dancing newsreaders, especially when the female anchor referred to the dancing weather woman, who is an African-American, as "sexy black" and not "sexy back".
  • On iTunes, when people download the "Clean version" of SexyBack the curse word is still mentioned in the song.

[edit] Achievements

According to Billboard, "SexyBack" is currently the second-highest selling single in a week during 2006, behind only "Hips Don't Lie" by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean, which set the record in June. "Hips Don't Lie" sold 267,000 digital downloads, while "SexyBack" sold 250,000 digital downloads. So far, "SexyBack" has stayed at number one in the United States for seven weeks.

This song made the third biggest jump to number one in Billboard Hot 100 history. Climbing 30 spots from 31 landing it at the summit of the chart at September 9, 2006.

[edit] First play controversy

The first exclusive play in the UK for "SexyBack" took place on The Scott Mills Show, although Timberlake's record label had given the rights to Chris Moyles to play it the next day. Other stations immediately followed suit.

Scott Mills broke another record label embargo for "Rudebox" by Robbie Williams in a similar fashion on July 7, 2006.
