Seven News
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Seven News (promoted on-air as 7NEWS) is the name of the television news service of Australia's Seven Network. Its flagship bulletin is broadcast at 6:00 p.m. nightly, with a separate bulletin for each of the five metropolitan markets. The Seven Network also produces a number of bulletins aired in regional Queensland under the name Seven Local News. Seven News is in direct competition with rival Channel Nine's National Nine News to which until recently, it had traditionally rated second. However Seven News always wins by a substantial margin in Perth.
In the first half of the 2006 ratings season, Seven News was the top rating news service nationally. The second half of the ratings season has seen the return of Seven's main rival National Nine News in the Sydney and Melbourne markets, but Seven News generally still wins nationally thanks to the huge dominance of its Perth news bulletin. Seven News is now in a head-locked battle with Nine in both Sydney and Melbourne where each bulletin/week could go either way. Seven's bulletin however is making ground in Brisbane, closing the gap with Nine and scoring wins on occasional nights (Nine still regularly win). Seven still dominate Perth, and regularly win in Adelaide.
The Seven News theme music is derived from John Williams' composition The Mission, which is used as the theme music for NBC Nightly News in the United States.
In recent years under new guidance, Seven News has taken a noticeably more local/community feel which is paying dividends in ratings as key markets such as Sydney and Melbourne are broadcasting more locally-focussed content. An example of this is the Seven Listens campaign where small one-person studios have been installed at Westfield Shopping Centres for shoppers to discuss issues. This has developed into distribution of material such as seen right with surveys also able to be completed online. Data collected from these surveys contribute to 'Special Reports' which are stories devoted to issues that would otherwise not be brought up or would only gain small attention through other news. The Westfield Seven Listens surveys have now ended.

[edit] Seven's 4:30 News
Seven air an afternoon news bulletin at 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Seven introduced the bulletin during the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, then titled Target Iraq. The bulletin, hosted by David Johnston, covered news from the war. After the war concluded, Seven continued the bulletin, now known as Seven's 4:30 News. The bulletin is shown across Australia, and was the second highest rating national bulletin, second only to Ten's Late News. When Johnston (a Melbourne based newsreader) retired, the bulletin was presented from the Seven Broadcast Centre in Melbourne by Rebecca Maddern, although on 3 July 2006, the bulletin moved to the network's News Central at Martin Place studios in Sydney, presented by Mike Amor. In October, Samantha Armytage took over from Mike Amor to try and boost the ratings which were lost during the move from Melbourne to Martin Place. [citation needed] Weather is presented by David Brown from the Seven Broadcast Centre in Melbourne.

[edit] Seven's Late News Updates
Until August 2003 there was also a late news bulletin, but it was axed and replaced with a 3 to 5 minute news update, in addition to the hourly updates throughout the evening. These updates are presented from each mainland state capital until 9.30pm, at which time they revert to national updates presented from the Sydney studios.
- Anchor: Chris Bath or Samantha Armytage
Kylie Gillies also shared presenting duties of the late news updates until Samantha Armytage began her role on the 4.30 News. Kylie Gillies is now the sports Presenter on Weekend Sunrise.
