Career Highlights

Setanta "Carlos" Ó hAilpín (born in Sydney, Australia on 18 March 1983) is an Irish/Rotuman Australian sportsman, born of an Irish father and Rotuman mother. He played hurling for Cork and Waterford Institute of Technology before joining the Australian Football League. Legendary Gaelic games commentator, Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, best summed up this heritage when discussing Setanta's older brother Seán Óg Ó hAilpín, also a hurler for Cork: "...his father's from Fermanagh, his mother's from Fiji, neither a hurling stronghold."

Setanta is currently a player for Carlton Football Club, and has been joined at the club by brother Aisake Ó hAilpín, who currently trains with the Blues. Originally placed on the rookie list, strong performances in the VFL for the Northern Bullants elevated Setanta to the primary list in place of Anthony Franchina during 2004. However, injury stunted his progress during that season, but he made his debut during 2005, with limited game time, scoring a goal with his only kick.

Ó hAilpín is on Carlton's senior list for 2006. After playing largely in the forward line for the first years of his development, he was shifted to half-back in early 2006, where he has played since. He gained regular senior selection late in the season, playing the final ten games of the season.

His nickname "Carlos" is derived from the similarity between his first name Setanta, and the surname of Mexican/American guitarist Carlos Santana.
