Tales From the Blind Pig (often simply The Blind Pig or TBP) is a fictional setting created in 1996 by Mark van Sciver. Over forty authors, contributing over three hundred stories, have developed the setting into a shared universe that commonly explores themes of personal alteration, including changes in physical form, gender, and age.[1] The setting is often considered part of furry fandom fiction.

[edit] Synopsis
The fictional history of the setting mirrors that of the real world until the point of divergence in 2001. At that time in the setting, a probe returning from a mission to Mars introduces an alien virus to Earth, resulting in pandemic. The majority of patients suffer flu-like symptoms, although the casualty rate is significant, but a small percentage of patients instead suffer permanent physical transformations in a condition known as SCABS. The majority of stories written for the setting take place between 2030 and 2040, after the immediate political and economic effects of the pandemic have lessened, but societal issues for disease sufferers are still at the forefront. Many are centered around a tavern somewhere in the northeastern United States called the Blind Pig Gin Mill, which caters primarily to SCABS sufferers and from which the setting takes its name.[2][3]
[edit] Recognition
The first story in the setting, Mark van Sciver's "Tales From the Blind Pig", originated on a mailing list affiliated with the Transformation Story Archive, and much of the setting's development occurred at that website. The authors contributing to the shared universe included several who were recognized and respected in the associated community. When the Transformation Story Archive was invited to nominate stories for the 1997 eScene awards for excellence in ezine-published fiction, six of the twelve nominated authors[4] were also Tales From the Blind Pig contributors.
Since then, Tales from the Blind Pig stories have themselves been published in ezines in several occasions, including three issues of the ezine Anthro.[5] TSAT, another ezine, has included stories from the setting on over 20 occasions, including an issue entirely dedicated to it.[6] Such stories have twice won first place awards in TSAT contests.[6][7] As of 2006, the Ursa Major awards, recognizing excellence in furry fandom fiction, has included stories from the setting on their Recommended List four times, each year from 2001 through 2004.[8][9][10][11]
