[edit] Multiple names
Maybe we should follow the Florina and Bitola convention here as well and only refer to the official name (Serres) without even the Greek transliteration?-- Avg 13:36, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
- The Greek speeling of Florina was removed by Telex yesterday without giving any reason. In the case of Bitola, there is a section called "Name" where Macedonian and Greek names are explained in more detail. Generally, there has been a constant revert war about Slavic names going on for the last several months with many towns in Greek Macedonia, and no consensus could be reached in this politically very sensitive issue. See also the Danzig/Gdansk dispute. Andreas (T) 13:51, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
- It was removed, because there is a naming section (which I wrote a few weeks ago). --Telex 13:56, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Serrai redirects here?
I just entered the place name Serrai, which according to Expedia Maps in located in Central Macedonia. Am I to understand according to the redirect, that these are one and the same place? I have some historical information attributed to Serrai that I need to confirm. -- Thanks, Deborahjay 08:00, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
- Of course it is the same place. All ancient Greek words in feminine plural ending in "ai" end in "es" in Modern Greek. There are a few exceptions for place names like Patra, Athina and Thiva, but Serrai became Serres. Go ahead and add your information. Andreas (T) 14:15, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks -- Now that I've overcome my reticence and am oriented towards tackling the Greek, I see the notation as to new and old forms of the name. As for the information (about the fate of Serres Jewry in WWII), it requires further corroboration that will take some time. -- Deborahjay 06:38, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
