Serrano class destroyer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Serrano class was a series of six destroyers which served with Chile during World War II.
[edit] Description
- Displacement: 1090 tons
- Speed: 35 knots
- Main guns: three 4.7 inch (45 calibers) guns firing a 49 lb shell at a rate of 12 rounds per minute
- Dual purpose gun: one 3 inch gun
- Torpedo tubes: six 21 inch tubes
- Mine warfare equipment: Serrano, Orella, and Hyatt equipped with mine laying capability, while Alden, Videla, and Riquelme were equipped as minesweepers
Chile ordered the Serrano class from builders in the United Kingdom to enhance the Chilean navy's ability to patrol its extensive coastline. The six vessels were completed by 1929, but in the event proved too lightly built for the harsher waters off the southern portion of Chile.
