Sergeant Cortez is a fictional character and the protagonist of the last two games in the TimeSplitters series.

Cortez is a fairly tall, bald space marine who is sent back in time to recover the coveted Time Crystals from the nefarious TimeSplitter aliens. His attire is a black pair of combat trousers and a metallic vest of some sort over a navy blue shirt. He also wears a pair of goggles for reasons unknown (in Future Perfect, however, the goggle strap has vanished, and they appear to be optic implants. The goggles may be meant as a parody of Pitch Black character Riddick, also see Chronicles of Riddick).

According to the other characters Cortez has a poor sense of humour. This is shown as he constantly repeats his catchphrase, "Time to split!" which usually gets responses such as "Ouch, that's not cool, man." (note that in TimeSplitters 2, Cortez is more serious, likening him to being more like Riddick).

In TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, his general calls Cortez "the best soldier they have". He is excellent at close combat and is stated in TimeSplitters 2 to be adaptable to any combat situation. He is also a winner of the Mr. Space bodybuilding competition, as his winning photo was used by the Time Assassins to point out their target.

[edit] TimeSplitters 2

Sergeant Cortez and Corporal Hart board the TimeSplitter Spacestation in the year 2401 in the hope of retrieving the time crystals. They manage to fight their way to the time portal that the TimeSplitters have forged, but not before a Timesplitter has taken each of the crystals to different times and locations, hiding them within Earth's history. Hart holds the 'splitters off while Cortez heads through time to inhabit the bodies of various people to manipulate history and recover the time crystals. He does so, and manages to escape the space station, but not before Corporal Hart is killed by the TimeSplitters after their mission is complete.

[edit] TimeSplitters: Future Perfect

Cortez returns to the base on Earth in 2401 to return the Time Crystals to the General and Anya, the top scientist working on them. He is then sent back in time to various time periods to take on the mysterious Jacob Crow, a time traveller who is tied to the Crystals. Cortez discovers that Crow is the creator of the TimeSplitters and battles through time to destroy him. It is revealed that the TimeSplitters were created by Crow in his search for immortality, which took him 200 years, 2 companies, & a religious cult formed from Khallos' henchmen. In the end, Crow is defeated and the entire Timesplitter War (as well as Machine War) is erased from history. After the universe changes, Anya admits that she finds Cortez as a hero. Whether or not Corporal Hart is still alive is unknown, and Cortez's future after Future Perfect is uncertain as well.

Henchmen Cortez

On the 1969 mission The Russian Connection, Cortez disguises himself as a Henchman in order to gain entry to the complex. He wears the trademark Henchmen powder blue tracksuit and rubber yellow boots, as well as a blue baseball hat. He also still wears his gloves, implants and uplink as well. Cortez also dresses as a doctor to be able to move through the lab without drawing attention. He wears the same oufit as Brother Bartholomew, except the face mask covers up none of his face. He is unlocked when you beat You Genius, U-Genix on normal mode or harder.
