Semnan is a city in northern Iran with a population estimated at 119,778 inhabitants (2005).[1] It is the provincial capital of Semnan province.
Semnan is situated at 1,138 metres above sea level at the southern foot of the Elburz Mountains. It is the regional market for local grains and cotton.
The production of textiles and carpets are the most important industries in the history of city. but now a day in compare with its population Semnan have very powerful industrial specially in the field of Automotive (Cars and Bikes). Semnan has traditionally been an important stopover on the trade routes between Tehran (220 kilometers [136 miles]) and Mashad (685 kilometers [426 miles]), and is today linked with the two cities by road and railways.
Semnan has its own language distinctive from Parsi as spoken in the rest of the country. Semnan Language (Semani) is different from the Persian. language of semnan's people is one of the branch Pahlavi language. "Pahlavi" is an ancient arian language. "Semani" has its own grammar and vocabularies. In the local language, Semnan is called Seman and people and language of Semnan are called Semani. Old Semnan consisted of four areas called: Shaji , Naasaar, Latibaar, and Esfanjan, each area having a distinctive local accent which is a little bit different from the others. Shaji is the largest section of Semnan, located in most east of city with the residents being called Shajiezh.
To the west of the city is "Maleh" which used to be a separate settlement but was not a part of Semnan. In the local language the inhabitants are known as Malezh. "Maleh" is consist of three part Kuery (Kodivar), Kushmaqaan, Zavaqaan. Now a day "Maleh" is part of Semnan
