Seminole, Texas

Seminole is a city in Gaines County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,910 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Gaines CountyGR6. It is the birthplace of country music singers Larry Gatlin and Tanya Tucker, and the place where legendary talk radio queen Randi Rhodes got her start in radio.

Seminole is located at 32°43′7″N, 102°38′60″W (32.718550, -102.649975)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.7 km² (3.3 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 5,910 people, 2,082 households, and 1,590 families residing in the city. The population density was 681.2/km² (1,762.3/mi²) . There were 2,337 housing units at an average density of 269.3/km² (696.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 80.64% White, 1.98% African American, 0.98% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 13.52% from other races, and 2.57% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 39.59% of the population.

There were 2,082 households out of which 41.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.6% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% were non-families. 21.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.28.

In the city the population was spread out with 31.9% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $32,063, and the median income for a family was $36,019. Males had a median income of $31,563 versus $17,010 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,624. About 14.6% of families and 18.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.1% of those under age 18 and 13.4% of those age 65 or over.
