[edit] Development and personality
Selphie is characterized with a somewhat childish nature. She takes pleasure in relatively simple things (such as trains) and is always full of energy. One of her most outstanding traits is her optimism. She always sees the world in a very positive light (she thinks that dictator Vinzer Deling is broadcasting a message for world peace in Timber). Although she may seem dimwitted, her skill with computers and machinery, demonstrated by her disarming of Galbadian missiles and piloting the starship Ragnarok, in addition to her placement in the intelligence squad of the SeeD field exam, shows she is actually more intelligent than she initially seems.
Despite her girlish demeanor, she also shows flashes of a subtle bloodthirsty streak and an unexpectedly dark sense of humor (she suggests skinning a Moomba and wearing it as a costume to escape the Galbadian prison). In the Japanese version, it is revealed that Selphie thinks in Kansai-ben (a Japanese dialect associated with humor in Japan) and thus her quirky style is somewhat justified.
Although she tends to annoy Zell a lot, Selphie is very supportive of her friends. She organizes a concert in Fisherman's Horizon along with Zell, Quistis, and Irvine to help the relationship between Squall and Rinoa. In addition, when Trabia Garden is destroyed by Galbadian missiles, she goes back to help raise her friends' spirits.
Selphie displays a sharp contrast with the main protagonist, Squall Leonhart. While Squall is initially very antisocial, serious, and negative, Selphie is open with her feelings, light-hearted, and positive. Thus, Selphie serves as a foil for Squall.
[edit] Appearances
[edit] Final Fantasy VIII
Selphie's first appearance in the game comes when she runs into Squall Leonhart while late for her class. She asks Squall to show her around because she has just transferred to Balamb Garden from Trabia Garden.
Selphie's next appearance occurs during the SeeD exam mission during Galbadia's assault on the Dollet Dukedom. Selphie is a messenger for her squad and is ordered to tell all other squads to withdraw from the city at a certain time. Selphie chases after the squad consisting of Squall, Zell Dincht, and Seifer Almasy, and her FMV entrance shows her tripping and falling down a cliff before them. She joins the party once Seifer runs off. Selphie wields oversized nunchaku in battle.
Later in the game, she is promoted to SeeD status, and made a permanent member of the game's battle party. Early on in Disk 2, she leads an assault on a Galbadian Missile Silo targeting Trabia and Balamb gardens. The player chooses two others to join Selphie; however, they fail to stop the missiles, and are forced to escape via a Galbadian ironclad. Selphie and the two others reunite with Squall and the rest of the party at Fisherman's Horizon later in the game.
Selphie remains as a member of the party for the duration of the game. She discovers that the entire party (with the exception of Rinoa) grew up together in the same orphanage. When the group acquires the Ragnarok airship, she pilots it with Irvine.
Her Limit Break is Slot, which allows her access to every magic spell in the game. Similar in style to a slot machine, the name of a random spell will appear in a menu, along with the number of times it will be used in succession (1, 2, or 3). The player is given the option to switch to another random spell, or cast the given spell. The lower Selphie's HP, the greater the chance of using more powerful spells. In addition to the in-game spells, Selphie can use four unique spells: "Full-Cure", "Wall", "Rapture", and "The End".
[edit] Kingdom Hearts
A 14 year old version of Selphie also appears as a non-player character in the Kingdom Hearts series with Tidus and Wakka (both of whom she likes to boss around somewhat). It is possible to fight her while on the islands, and her weapon is a jumprope. By Kingdom Hearts II, Selphie is a little lonely as she and the guys (who are physically absent in Kingdom Hearts II) drifted a bit and are now into different things. As such, she has become closer to her classmate Kairi.
Selphie is voiced by Molly Keck in the English version and Mayuko Aoki in the Japanese version, who also voiced Yuna in both Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2.
