Selena is the debut album by Selena Y Los Dinos under the EMI Latin label. At the time of its release, Selena was already a star on the Tejano market, being the recipient of several Tejano Music Awards. This album, presented to a larger audience, the direction that Selena would take, as a performer and trendsetter. Recorded in "Selena" was a song titled "My Love," which was written by Selena, that samples from pop influences, around that time. Other songs--like "Sukiyaki" (a cover of Kyu Sakamoto's 1963 hit), "Ámame, Quiéreme" (her first duet with Pete Astudillo), and the cumbia "Besitos"--would play a pivotal role on how Selena would mix rhythm and sound, which would become her trademark. This album was released days after the death of Manuel J. Clouthier.
