Selby's Secret is the first book in the Selby Series by Duncan Ball. It was first published in 1985 (and once again in 2004) and is the oldest book in the series.

Selby understands human talk while watching Hearthwarm Hearth, a show about a butler working in a huge mansion. Selby decides to learn how to speak the language by practising in front of a mirror while the Trifles were away. The now intelligent Selby decides to make this the Trifles' gift for Christmas until he realises that it would ruin his life forever, therefore keeping his ability a secret.

Selby has had a cold for a month while Dr Trifle says (for the sixth time) that there should be a water-wheel in Bogusville Creek. Suddenly there is a knock on the door from Professor Krakpott from the Department of Old and Crusty Thins at the Federal University. Professor Krakpott shows Dr Trifle an ancient Feeblestan plate which was a gift from the Shan to the Minister as a friendship gift and asks the doctor to decipher it. Both men leave, leaving Selby is left behind. Selby, becuase of his cold, breaks the plate and assembles it incorrectly. Fortunately for Selby, when Dr Trifle returns he breaks the plate himself but this time reassembles it correctly. Professor Krakpott returns and booth men decipher the plate while Selby thinks "What did I say about this cold making life boring?"
