Selbu is a municipality in the county of Sør-Trøndelag, Norway. It had a population of 3,944 (January 1, 2004. The municipality administrative centre is Mebond.

The Norse form of the name was Selabú. The first element is the genitive case of the old name of the lake Selbusjøen (Norse Seli). The last element is n 'district'. (The old name of the lake is probably derived from the word seli m 'harness' - the lake is long and narrow.)

The municipality covers 1,254 km², which consists of:

Traditionally Selbu has been an agricultural and forest managing community. The area is well known for its special knitting techniques. The last decades have led to efforts in business such as high technology, electronics and mechanics.
