The SEIU United Health Care Workers West is a statewide local union of the Service Employees International Union in California in the United States. It has a membership of 140,000.
UHW was created as the merger of two SEIU local unions, Local 250 in Northern California and Local 399 in Southern California. The larger of those two locals, Local 250, began when the resolution of the 1934 general strike in San Francisco won hospital workers the right to organize unions for the first time in the United States, starting with San Francisco General Hospital.
The President of the union is Sal Rosselli, who has been the president for over 20 years. This local is headquarted in Oakland, California and has offices statewide. The represented workers are health care workers, including nurses, homecare workers and nursing home workers. The membership is growing rapidly and is very diverse. Over 50 languages are represented among its membership.
Recent victories of the union including winning a major strike against Sutter Health in San Francisco, the conclusion of successful negotiations with Catholic Healthcare West, and a statewide contract victory with HCA. Most of the current organizing work of the union is being carried out in Southern California.
