"Secret Smile" quickly became a UK radio favourite in the summer of 1999 for Semisonic, eventually peaking at #13 on the official UK Singles Chart. It is still played (as of 2006) regularly on local radio stations and is a popular request, especially on romantically themed shows.
The music video features Dan and a Japanese actress playing with a video camera. The paparazzi then arrive and the couple make a run for it. The video was shot in February 1998 and was directed by British music video director, Sophie Muller.
