Returning to the site of an eight-year-old mission, Commander Riker encounters an identical double of himself, who tries to rekindle a relationship with Troi.

LeVar Burton (who plays Geordi LaForge) directed this episode.
Mae Jemison, an African-American astronaut, briefly appears in this episode. In making this appearance Jemison followed in the footsteps of one of her inspirations, Nichelle Nichols, who played Lieutenant Uhura in the original Star Trek, and inspired Dr. Jemison to become an astronaut.
