Seasons in the Abyss (song)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Seasons in the Abyss" is the tenth song/title track from the 1990 album Seasons in the Abyss by the thrash metal band Slayer. Running at 6:37, it was written by Jeff Hanneman and Tom Araya. The song begins with a slow, ominous, distorted guitar part that then segues into a clean riff. The melody and speed of the song's introduction recall past Slayer efforts such as "South of Heaven" and "Dead Skin Mask". The melody riffing continues to 1:44, when the song begins in earnest with mid-paced drums, guitars, and bass. The chorus is one of Slayer's most melodic, although this melody is tempered by the subject matter and Tom Araya's detached, slightly disturbing delivery. Lyrically, said subject matter makes references to ritual sacrifice and defilement while also addressing a descent into corruption, evil, and madness painted as a kind of dark liberation.

"Seasons in the Abyss" was released as a single in 1991. A music video for the song followed, which depicted the band playing before a series of pyramids and pyres, ominously filmed in Egypt. This song remains a staple of Slayer's live set to this day.
