Sean Thornton (born 18th May 1983) is a footballer with Doncaster Rovers. He started his career with Tranmere Rovers F.C. before illegally joining Sunderland A.F.C. in 2002 the F.A. later ruled that Sunderland A.F.C. were to pay Tranmere Rovers F.C. a compensation fee of £250,000 (a 1/4 of his value of £1 million set by Tranmere Rovers F.C. when they heard he was attracting interest) and Sunderland A.F.C. had to pay a fine of just £1,500.

Despite a reputation as a dead-ball specialist, he has made problems for himself off the pitch with his attitude and his fitness, beginning his final season at Sunderland a stone overweight.

Many Tranmere fans hold a grudge against him for the circumstances in which he left the club. He had just broken into Tranmere's first team when it came out that not only had he been in talks with Sunderland, but he had also trained with them. After he left Tranmere he said he vowed never to return for fear of his life. He came back to Tranmere whilst playing for Doncaster at the end of the 2005/2006 season, and although received choruses of boo's and jeer's throughout the whole 90 minutes,he put in a fine display to help Doncaster Rovers record a 2-0 victory that very nearly clinched a last day play off birth. He started the 2006-07 season on the bench for Doncaster but soon earned his place in the team, although as of late again he has been on the bench, mainly down to the new manager (o'Driscoll) prefering to play Stock and Green in the middle of midfield, something that still baffles most Doncaster supporters due to the way sean Thornton seems to add a different dimension to the team.
