Sean Hughes (Armagh)

For other persons named Sean Hughes, see Sean Hughes (disambiguation).

Sean Michael Hughes is a farmer from County Armagh, Ireland. He is believed by some people to have been involved in almost all Provisional IRA operations in the South Armagh area from the 1970s.

He is the brother of Paul Hughes who as a member of the Provisional IRA was convicted of murdering two Australian tourists (mistaken for British servicemen) in Roermond, Netherlands in 1990 and who was cleared of murdering Major Mike Dillon-Lee in Dortmund the same year.

The Times claims that Hughes has left the IRA Army Council. He is believed to have lost interest in serving on the council because the IRA has become inactive, though his departure is not seen as a protest.
