Sean Bennett

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sean Bennett is best known as an enigmatic and reclusive classical pianist from the United States. He is a former child prodigy, performing Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto at age 14 and winning numerous competitions including a prize in the National Kosciuszko Chopin Competition at 17 (made famous by Van Cliburn), and one of only a few pianists to have performed and recorded the major Horowitz arrangements. He is considered by many to be a leading and vocal opponent of the purist form of classical piano interpretation, seemingly preferring to evoke memorable/emotional reactions, good or bad, from his listeners with his interpretive choices. This makes critics of his recordings highly polarized in their reviews on the leading music message boards, which often comment on his technical brilliance, but question his interpretive style.

One of the most downloaded classical pianists on the internet, his albums Sean Bennett Classical Piano and Sean Bennett Transcriptions Live are available on Yahoo, Napster, Rhapsody, iTunes, AllMusic, RealNetworks, AOL Music, Audiofind.ru, MusicNow, Musicnet, MSN Music, eMusic, Download.com, Vitaminic.com, and on the Digital/Orchard Label. A previous album Teenage Hysteria is out of print and appeared on MP3.com from 1999-2003. He is one of the only classical musicians to have had a top ten selection on Download.com, a feat achieved in October 2004. In early September 2006 the Sean Bennett channel became the most viewed classical music channel of the week, and the 11th most viewed music channel overall on the famed video site Youtube.
