SDP Multimedia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SDP Multimedia (short for Streaming Download Project Multimedia) is a free, but closed source project to allow the download of streaming media, which name-brand media clients intentionally prevent. The goal is to let people save video they're viewing, to watch later. The SDP Downloader is capable of storing copies of streaming videos transferred with the MMS protocol, which attempts to prohibit such reproduction.

This is controversial because some media providers wish to keep a monopoly on the information they're sending, forcing everyone to come to them to pay, or so that it doesn't detract from some alternate source (a TV show, a movie), so they can make it "go away" if their goals change, et cetera. Those groups see this as a threat to their control of that media.
