[edit] Birth

David Maclean Rutherford was born in Forth Park Hospital, Kirkcaldy (not Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, as he would have preferred), at 3:14pm on the 28th of September, 1988. Arguably, this choice of location triggered a lasting inferiority complex that has manifested itself through a traditional Scottish chip on both shoulders and, more recently, difficulties regarding his perceived "outsider" status at independent school. His birth was particularly arduous, as he was inverted, and it is possible that these early complications contributed to a "love-shy" character in later life. Following a short time he and his mother returned to St Andrews, where he has lived throughout his life.

[edit] Education

Primary education was undertaken at Greyfriar's RC Primary School from nursery to halfway through P6 (on the Scottish State system) and at New Park Preparatory School from 4th Form to 6th Form (as with the English Private system). He moved to Fettes College in Edinburgh for his secondary education, arriving on the 4th of September 2001; he is a boarder in Moredun House, school number mo7140. Currently, he is studying Economics, History, Maths and Physics at A-Level, and is taking an Advanced Extension Award in English.

[edit] Other Names

Given the general tradition of calling people only by surname or a nickname at private schools, and the unweildiness of "Rutherford" for this purpose, David has picked up various nicknames since his arrival at Fettes:

Rudds is by far the most common nickname attributed to David, although it is in fact derived from the earlier Ruddy. This was picked up during his first year at Fettes, while a suitable short-form was still being quested for. At one point David was heard to exclaim, "Oh, ruddy hell!" which was seized on as an ideal option. The origin of the name led to a brief proliferation of the phrase, "Ruddy hell, Rudds!" although this fashion has since died out.

Legend was attributed to David the following year. It should be noted that it was used with heavy irony, mainly by people who considered him to be markedly less than a legendary individual, although some of his friends did use it sparingly. The title has generally fallen out of fashion. He was also briefly known as Edgar, from the Dutch footballer Edgar Davids. This was used almost exclusively by Iain Bell.

Scuddworthy was hit upon by David's dorm-mate for the final term of his third year at Fettes Edward Philip, simply as a corruption of the earlier Rudds. He has since adopted it as an almost universal net-moniker: he has never encountered another Scuddworthy, making it particularly suitable for usernames.

Glasses Boy has lingered as an affectionately teasing nickname, used exclusively by his Chinese neighbor Tan "Terry" Hong Qiu. Similarly, Liam Stewart has often referred to David as Stevie Wonder owing to his myopia.

Spexico or DJ Spex has recently risen to popularity amongst certain peers, and in particular younger members of Moredun. It was coined during a weekend spent recording amateur rap music with friends, where David provided backing beats for rappers Russell "MC Russ da Bomb" Anderson, Sebastien "MC fNic" Spiers and Jamie William "JamW" Johnston.

Over the past year Mark Barbour has taken to calling David Perfection owing to his generally high performance in his Economics classes.

David also composes music under the moniker Yuske, and writes freelance articles for the unofficial Fettes newsletter The Inspector as Sleeper!

[edit] Interests

David's greatest interest is music: he is the bassist and co-writer in the currently dormant group Gallery, and produces solo work as Yuske. This draws strongly on the Shoegazing scene and electronica elements, including minimal live instrumentation backed by thick synthesizers with non-dominant vocals and understated bass.

Also, David is a keen debater. He has twice won his school's Iain Macleod Award for Debating (2004 and 2005), as well as appearing on the inter-school team and taking part in the judging of junior competitions.
