A Scupper is an opening on the deck of a boat to allow runoff during heavy rains or large waves. Sometimes used to refer to similar drainage for a building.

The verb form is primarily British slang for overwhelming something or someone. "To scupper someone" is to put them in a poor position or endanger them. Or "to scupper a plan" is to ruin it.

The verb form is also used to describe a ship which is sinking or was (possibly deliberately) sunk - a "scuppered ship".
