Scuff mark

For marks left by wheels on roadways, see Skid mark.

A scuff mark is residue left on a surface when another surface rubs up against it. [1] While intended to mean floors, scuff marks can also occur on walls as well.

[edit] Scuff marks on floors

Marks from shoes as well as rubber based wheels can occur on floors. These marks are caused when the shoe or wheel is drug across the floor. This friction leaves a streak of whatever the shoe or wheel was made of. While generally black, scuff marks can occur as other colors as well.

[edit] Removing scuff marks from floors

Scuff mark removal from floors is generally easy. Simply applying pressure to the mark and using a twisting motion (for example, with one's non-marking soled shoe) is usually all that is needed. Textured floors, such as vinyl tile, will need scrubbing with a pad or cloth that can fit into the bumps of the texture. Complications can occur if the mark appears on a wax floor and has been burnished over. The wax above the mark will need to be removed before the mark can be cleaned. The other, more drastic solution is to strip and wax the entire floor. Too much pressure applied to the floor may damage either the wax or the floor itself.[2]

[edit] Scuff marks on walls

Scuff marks occurring on walls are normally caused by shoes. These marks can occur on any surface whether paint, wallpaper or plastic based.

[edit] Removing scuff marks from walls

A greater degree of care is needed when removing scuff marks from walls. This is because the underlying surface of the wall (e.g., drywall) is more fragile than most floor materials. Also, too much friction applied to the wall in cleaning may strip the paint or damage the wallpaper. While specialty products for removing scuff marks do exist, there are more simple and less expensive solutions. Erasers, such as those found on pencils, can remove the mark with light pressure. More stubborn marks will needed either rubbing alcohol applied on a rag with light pressure.[3]

[edit] Word origin

The work scuff means 'To scrape the feet while walking.' [4]
