- You might want to look at Wikipedia:Transclusion costs and benefits, and at Wikipedia:Subst on the issue of server laod. Also trascluded signatures are vandalism targets, becaue if one is vandalized, the effects show up on every page you have signed. personally I would prefer thet people used simpler signatures, but if they must use complex ones, they really should not transclude them without using subst. Indeed there have been suggestions that this practice be banned, although that has not been adopted as policy to date. DES (talk) 18:09, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

- Hello Screwball, thanks for your question. I actually did not add your name to the Help page. Someone else did that. You can click the History tab of the Help page if you want to figure out who it was. As for why they did it, it is customary for all users to sign all Talk page posts with the tildes. If they forget, or choose not to do so, it is pretty common for someone to come along and add it in for them. If you scan over the rest of the Help page, you will probably see other examples. You will also notice that another user even went to the trouble to check your contributions and figure out what article it is you were probably asking about. At the help desk, I asked for general info on the stub-adding. You had to mention my article. I never handed that information over to you and I never wanted you to reveal what I wrote. - Spiteful?! That's an interesting response to someone who was trying to help you. Let's take a look at this in a few ways...
- The instructions for the Help desk say to sign your questions/responses using four tildes (e.g. ~~~~). You didn't follow the instructions by neglecting to sign.
- You were signed in when you posted your question. To hide your identity you could easily have logged out, posted your question, then logged back in after having posted the question.
- You asked the question. A rational and logical person would like an answer that was as helpful as possible. A person could ask "Where's the nearest McDonald's?" Although if they don't say that they're at some specific address then there's no way to give them a concise answer. We could only tell them that we need more info or send them to some site that lists all the McDonald's locations. By pointing out which article you were referring to the other users could just go to that article and see what stub tag was appropriate. Only after I went and did that little bit of detective work and pointed out which article you were likely referring to could someone suggest the {{US-politician-stub}} tag. It was a good concise response that answered the question specifically. It wasn't vague or ambiguous in the least.
- The respondent also was able to inform you that the article is a bit long to be considered a stub and suggested alternatives to the problem. Alternatives that were more appropriate than the solution that you had already come to.
- I was not being spiteful, or intrusive. I was trying to help you out by providing more information to more knowledgable users who could better answer your question. If you have some notion that by asking a question you are somehow a lesser person and would like to hide the fact that you don't know something, then it is my opinion that you have to learn that nobody is perfect and we all need to ask questions from time to time. [edit] About Wikipedia
Hi Screwball, Thanks for your message. Believe me, many people here have run into some of the same difficulties. Wikipedia can be a complex place. We're working on more than 800,000 articles in the English version, and there are more than 300,000 named user accounts, not counting anonymous IP addresses. Many of these are inactive or overlapping accounts, so it is anyone's guess how many people are really contributing here each week. My guess is that it is in the tens of thousands. All of these people have different ideas about things and are working to take the community in (sometimes subtly) different directions. As I'm sure you've figured out, the community is also pretty loosely structured. Most things are decided by whoever happens to be around paying attention to a topic at the time it is discussed. In my opinion, the "instruction book" is not laid out as well as it could be. One jumping off place is Wikipedia:Community_Portal. Also, Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines has links to a lot of policies such as Wikipedia:Sign your posts on talk pages. There are also links to some tools and technical data about the software at the bottom of the page. Some users collect tools they find useful on their user page like I've done here.
When I first started contributing on Wikipedia, I learned a lot by copying what other people did. For example, if I saw text that was italicized and I wanted to know how to italicize text, I would click the edit link and see what codes they had put in. It took me at least a month before I realized that there are some buttons above the edit window to do bold italic wikilink, etc. It was a long time before I got around to trying to customize my signature, so I think I knew more by then. If you look at what my signature looks like in the edit window, you can see that what I have is not that complicated. Signatures can be fairly elaborate, and I don't know any one place where the process is explained in great detail. There is some info at Wikipedia:Signature but I don't think it would have been enough for you to create the signature that you have. You happened to try to customize your signature pretty soon after coming here, so I think that happened to be a hard thing that you stumbled upon. I don't even know how to make the colors in a signature like yours. If I wanted to learn how, I'd do pretty much what I did before, which is to study what code goes into a signature I like, or I'd do what you did and just ask someone. It would be a good project perhaps for one of us to put more informaiton into the Wikipedia:Signature page. Please note, however, that elaborate signatures are somewhat controversial. (Please see [1].) There was a really heted discussion about this some time ago, but it didn't occur at the link I just gave, it was somewhere else. I'll try to find it for you.
As for becoming an administrator, the policy is at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship. There are no official prerequisites for adminship, other than a basic level of trust from other editors. However, some users set a variety of criteria for how they will personally vote, and some of these people have published their personal standards at standards. Many people set a minimum number of edits a user must have before they support them as administrator. Someone did a study a while back that showed that nominations for users with 2,000 or more edits are statistically more likely to succeed than users with fewer than 2,000 edits. Other voters like to see that your contributions include a balance of work on articles, discussion about policy, etc. Some people will vote against you if you've done a lot of controversial things, though people will forgive almost anything done when you first got here if you have shown dilligence later. You may nominate yourself, but some people do frown on this. You can browse Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship to see what types of things get brought up in the voting, and you can read about my own adminship vote here. See also: Kate's Tool for edit counting.
I remember the question you are referring to from the Science Reference Desk. It looks like that question has been removed off the page as part of normal archiving of older questions. I don't know exactly how the process is done on that page. With Article Talk pages, it is proceedure to create a sub page like Talk:Article/Archive1. However, that does not seem to be the way the reference desk works. You could post a question on the Talk page of the Science reference desk asking where they put the old info. If they don't put it in a special archive, then you could go back to the Science page and click the history button to go as far back in time as you want and look at any previous version of the page. However, since you responed to the question yourself, there is an easier way. At the upper right-hand corner of your browser window you should see a link called "my contributions". That will show you everything you have ever written here, so you can go back and find your answer to the question, and that will show you what the Science desk looked like on that day. This is easier if you routinely use informative edit summaries when you make your posts.
I'm a little unsure how to answer your question about the debates. I may be misinterpreting you, but when you say the Help desk includs fights and people questioning each others character, it sounds like you are hopeing to find more of the same? Arguments certainly flare up from time-to-time, but they are not to be encouraged. It is Wikipedia polciy to be WP:Civil and Wikipedia:No personal attacks. While a good argument can sometimes feel kind of good, and we do have fun from time to time with our little inside jokes, etc, we are here to build an encyclopedia. You may want to see Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not. Therefore, we don't have any moderated forums or places that are deliberately designed for debate for its own sake. All Talk pages, be they for articles or Policies do provide a place to debate how we can improve the article, or improve Wikipedia as a whole. But these places are a means to an end, they don't exist just to provide a place for debate's sake. So, I guess if you enjoy debates, those are the places to go, so long as your goal is to make the place better and not just win debates.

- First, your definition of religion: "A Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe. Religion most commonly is an institutionalized system of tradition and spiritual praise for a Divine being or beings." I feel that you have provided too strict a definition. The article religion has a broader definition: "The sum total of answers given to explain humankind's relationship with the universe." I feel that is too broad. Regardless, I feel that an atheist cannot believe in any god. One who believes in hundreds of gods and rejects the existence of a creator god is not an atheist.
- As for religion in China, before, during, and after the height of Communism, there have been three primary religions: Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Confuciansism is very much a philosophy by western definition. Taoism is a belief in a supernatural power (the tao). Buddhism is a belief in gods, supernatural powers, and an ongoing soul. Being in China, I witnessed a strong practice of all three religions, and also Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. That is why I do not feel that China can be regarded as an country of atheists.
- Humanistic Judaism is a sect of Judaism that does not believe in God. They have a system of beliefs and ritual practices, but reject a God. With the exception of rejecting God, they are a common Jewish religion.

Thanks for uploading Image:Maimonides.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. [edit] "Hasids" & negative reporting about Borough Park
Hi Screwwball: Your use of the word "Hasids" (in the Borough Park article) as the plural for Hasid (which is correct in the singular only) is both incorrect and offensive. The correct and common plural usage is Hasidim or Hasidic Jews. It is also becoming very clear from the content and tone of your ongoing additions to the Borough Park article that you have added material that is almost always negative about the Hasidic communities that live there, which casts a big shadow of doubt about your true motives. For now, I have tried to edit and keep most of your remarks in that article by giving you the benefit of the doubt especially since you seem to lack a deep knowledge about Judaism in generel and Hasidic Judaism in particular judging by your usage of the word "Hasids" etc. I hope that we can continue to work together in a true spirit of NPOV writing. Hi, I don't really know much about Charles Barron. I ran across the article since it was marked for wikification, so I did a little work on it. I don't know about the statement about the killing of police officers (it wasn't added by me). I noticed it, and since it sounded inflammatory, and was both ungrammatical and unsourced, I commented it out. If you feel like deleting it altogether, that's fine with me. - Hi, The article is clearly very well researched, but it now seems to me that it has NPOV problems. Barron is clearly a controversial figure, and while the article states his positions and quotes him in great detail, it doesn't do so nearly as extensively for his opponents. For example, ok, he dislikes Giuliani, so what does Giuliani think of him? I'm not taking sides, but I think both sides should have a voice. Another example: the first section says that he thinks his white colleagues are ignorant of black issues: well, maybe they are, but a reader can't judge this unless these critics' positions are described in more detail. - Hi, the reason I removed the Zimbabwe link is because usually in Wikipedia an article is marked as a "Main article" at the top of a section when that section is a summary of the main article: see Mauritania for example. However, the section in question is about Mugabe's visit to NY and his releationship with Barron. By 'inline wikilink' I mean that the Zimbabwe article could be linked to something in the text, for example "removing white farmers ..." though I don't know if that's the appropriate place. My other concern is that Barron is quoted extensively but his opponents hardly at all which makes the article seem more one-sided: for example, what did those who call him a "revolutionary" actually say? And who said it? Btw I used the word 'aiming' instead of running because Barron is currently not 'running for Congress' but running in a primary, i.e., aiming for a seat in Congress. - Re Shahawar Matin Siraj. This article looks balanced to me. One suggestion I would make is to give details of the allegations/crime early in the article, instead of forcing the reader to infer them. Since the article has the name of the guilty party as its title, there should probably be a bit more biographical information about him, such as his age. - Re Islamic Thinkers Society. The article obviously portrays the organization in a negative light, but, if what the article says is true, they are kind of scary, in my opinion. - It basically involves using HTML-like font tags that use the Red-Green-Blue hexadecimal system. I know, it sounds complicated. If you wanna do some reading, it's on web colors. Actually, I got it from another user when I was just starting wikipedia a year ago. His name was User:Merovingian and he might be able to help you too.

- Well, I appreciate the thanks and I must say it is refreshing to receive applause from fellow editors. I've had several scuffles in my editing time at Wikipedia, and I'm glad that I'm appreciated here. However, the only way to fix an article like that is to add information that is referenced and researched. That article particularly had an awful history of whitewashing and reverts.

However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

Thanks for uploading Image:Brock Lesnar F5.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}
. If you have not already done so, please also include the source of the image. In many cases this will be the website where you found it.
Please specify the copyright information and source on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator.
