Since 1680, Sweden had been an absolute monarchy. All power was consentrated at the monarch, and the power of the council and parliament were heavily limited.
Under the rule of Charles XII Sweden was involved in the Great Northern War in ???-???. The war had disastrous consequenses for Sweden, and marked the end of Sweden as a greate power. Most of the territories Sweden had gained during its expansion since the middle of the 16th century were lost. The war also exausted the peasants back home, that had to economically support the war.
When Charles XII died in 1718...
