Wikipedia:Scottish Wikipedians' notice board
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Welcome! Fàilte! Walcome! This is a notice board for Scottish Wikipedians, Wikipedians living in Scotland, and anyone else interested in Scotland-related topics. Here we may suggest topics or articles in need of expansion; highlight linguistic discussions; propose common projects; ask questions; or post anything else related to Scotland, Scottish people or things, or of interest for Scottish editors.
If there is anything you wonder about regarding Wikipedia or this notice board, don't hesitate to ask on the talk page. Also, major structural changes to the notice board should be discussed at the talk page first. Note that this page is modelled on other similar pages; see the Swedish Wikipedians' notice board for tips on use and formats; and it runs alongside many other notice boards (see sidebar below).

[edit] New stuff
Please note that none of our subpages make any claim to being remotely comprehensive: they are not, because it would be far too time-consuming and we are not aware of any method to automatically capture new Scotland-related material as it is created. But they can be used as a resource by interested editors, so you may want to visit them and click the Watch tab.

[edit] Requests for Article attention/review/comment/cleanup
- Alasdair MacMhaighstir Alasdair - a slightly scrappy article which ( if i remember rightly) i basically translated into English from a Gaelic source. Hopefully if i have time over Christmas period il give it a proper tidy and expand/bring it up to a decent standard but itd be great if some others could have a quick look at it and fix anything they think needs fixing. siarach 15:30, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- Scottish Reformation article has been started. Because I also live in the real world this article will take a long time. But I'd like any feedback anyone would care to give on the article so far. Slackbuie 21:25, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- Dùn Èistean - i dont think it needs any real clean up as such, im just hoping some others will have a look at it and improve it in anyway they think is necessary. siarach 11:03, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
- Scotland - I think the article looks good and could be a great candidate for a Featured Article, but it needs major work on the references, copy editing and a maybe a slight paring down of the History section. I've added three or four refs today. I'd like to get this ready for a Peer Review by the end of the month as a first step to FAC. Any comments or help will be appreciated.--WilliamThweatt 04:12, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
- Gaelic Traditionalism - an article of a dubious nature (google topic and ~900 hits with the article and mirrors of it appearing as the most prominent) which is misleading in giving the impression that this pagan movement has any links to existing Gaelic culture/community within Scotland or Ireland.
-
-
- I have proposed a page move to rename this article. Anyone interested in commenting, please go to the article's talk page and weigh in. Thanks.--WilliamThweatt 22:28, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
- Page was moved yesterday to Clannada na Gadelica. Still needs cleaned up for propoganda and POV.--WilliamThweatt 04:00, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

- Barnett Formula - seems a bit POVish in some areas to me, but am not sure how to go about tackling it. Article seems to conflate several areas that don't seem strictly relevant. Would appreciate it if someone could take a bit of a look? Globaltraveller 20:50, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
- Battle of Harlaw - Has been rewritten as of 1/6/06 but could do with a bit of a review and read through. siarach 15:43, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- Isle of Skye - history and culture
- Beith
- James Chalmers
- Talk:William Reid
- Bank of Scotland
Scottish Episcopal Church - request for comment, expanded history, and a modest clean-up. Was the church formerly officially called the Episcopal Church of Scotland? If so, when did the name-change occur?--Mais oui! 06:48, 22 October 2005 (UTC)Underway- Torphichen Preceptory - still has Cleanup notice

- Create redirects for all Scottish football clubs, like this: Keith_FC (without dots) which redirects into Keith F.C. (with the dots) --MacRusgail 15:26, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
- Guys, anyone fancy helping out in purging WP/WC of the redundant saltires? I started this a few weeks back when replaced the main versions with two SVG versions: Image:Flag of Scotland.svg and Image:Flag of Scotland (traditional).svg. I've mopped up almost all of the images that were used previously, such that on en.wikipedia we're down to just the two new ones. However wikimedia commons has: Image:Scotland flag 300.png (usage) and Image:Flag of Scotland Pantone300.png (usage) - these are used a fair bit on the other language wikipedia sites. I'm going to work my way through them, but if anyone fancies lending a hand then great.
Would you beleive this has also lead to me replacing the Flag of Tenerife too!
Thanks/wangi 16:41, 15 November 2005 (UTC) - Billy Kay - just put up a short article on the author and Scots language expert/activist which could do with expanding i think.
- University of Strathclyde needs some fact checking
- Tillicoultry - There is still work to be done, esp wrt sources etc, but reviews/comments welcomed
- Atlantic Ocean - This is a request for your opinion on place names (before I post RfC). The problem arises following attempts by a Wikipedia user to seek out references to "England", "Scotland" and "Wales" and replace them with "United Kingdom". One example of this can be seen at Atlantic Ocean where User:Owain recently made changes including changing text from "Aberdeen, Scotland" to "Aberdeen, United Kingdom"; from "Liverpool, England" to "Liverpool, United Kingdom"; and from "Newport, Wales" to "Newport, United Kingdom" etc. I believe that:(1) the edit was non-sensical, totally unnecessary and politically-motivated; (2) the edit made the article imprecise in not giving sufficient detail to pinpoint a place by omitting the obvious (i.e. the country), and gave less information than the original edit; (3) to deliberately ignore the country is to disrespect the people, culture and traditions of those nations;(4) there have been a large number of edits to this page by many other Wikepedians, all of whom saw no problem with the identification of the country. Can we please have some Scottish views on the convention to be used when referring to British place names? -- Maelor 15:38, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Royal Consorts of Scotland - Lots of work. Good concept. A table of consorts of the monarchs of Scotland. Big problem is that it includes Henry VIII as a monarch of Scotland. Everything after Mary is English. I don't have the know-how to fix it. Canæn 05:21, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Scotland-related articles carrying a Cleanup tag
Gaelic Traditionalismarticle moved to Clannada na Gadelica and now carries {{not verified}}- Gaelic warfare
- Susan Montford, filmmaker of questionable note, needs cleanup at least.
- Scottish pork taboo - I have doubts about this article. Needs better references at the very least.

[edit] Possible candidates for featured article status
- Curling, stated aim on Talk page
- Aberdeen as-is appears better than either the Edinburgh or Glasgow articles.
- Doune Castle - which is quite entertaining, and generally ok. Could do with (peer?) review and checking for any refinements needed. ..dave souza 12:14, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
- Edinburgh (as proposed by WikiProject UK geography: "... to featured quality by June 2006".)
- Glasgow
- Scotland
- William Murdoch - I'm trying to get this up to featured article level, it's been knocked back on the AID but as he is a neglected Scot perhaps some here can assist. AllanHainey 15:50, 1 November 2005 (UTC)
- William John Macquorn Rankine, needs a lot of work, but is of international/scientific interest. --MacRusgail 18:28, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Scotland-related stub markers (templates)
Consider tagging short Scotland-related articles, with a designated stub tag. For general Scotland stubs, write this {{Scotland-stub}} at the bottom of the article. (All such articles are listed in Cat:Scotland stubs)
- For Scottish biography stubs, {{Scotland-bio-stub}} (Cat:Scottish people stubs)
- For Scottish buildings stubs, {{Scotland-struct-stub}} (Cat:Scottish building and structure stubs)
In addition, external links to webpages that are only in the Scottish Gaelic language, can be marked by a template called template:gd icon, inserted by typing {{gd icon}} in front of the link (displaying this image (Scottish Gaelic)).
External links to webpages that are only in the Scots language, can be marked by a template called template:sco icon, inserted by typing {{sco icon}} in front of the link (displaying this image Template:Sco icon).

For Scottish geography-related stubs, {{Scotland-geo-stub}} (articles listed in Cat:Scotland geography stubs) (this is likely to be split by region in the near future)

- I put in some of the early legwork on the Irvine Welsh and Ian Rankin (well John Rebus actually) pages. I was also the contributer who dragged the Inverurie page out of stubsville. That said, I have been unforgivably lazy on the wikipedia-scotland front. Particularly interested in Scottish literature, language and geography, generally interested in everything about Scotland. Emigrant: for 7 long years I have harboured intense unsated cravings for fish suppers, dark ales and steak pies.
