Scoville Jenkins (b. September 23rd, 1986 in Atlanta, Georgia) is an American tennis player on the ATP Tour [1]. He is sometimes referred to by his nickname "Sco." As of September 13, 2006, he is the 329th ranked player in the world.
[edit] Junior Career
On August 16th, 2004, at the age of 17, Jenkins became the first African-American to capture the Boys’ 18 USTA National Hard Court title in singles in the tournament’s 89 year history [2].
[edit] Professional Career
At the 2005 U.S. Open, Jenkins won a dramatic first round match that went to five sets against Swiss veteran George Bastl, who defeated Pete Sampras at Wimbledon in 2002. In his second round match, Jenkins played Spanish sensation and fellow teenager Rafael Nadal. Nadal was the number two player in the world at the time while Jenkins was hovering in the top 250. Despite the rankings gap, Scoville showed no fear against Nadal and put up a tough battle. The match was decided in three very closely contested sets, all of which were won by Nadal. Jenkins also has the dubious distinction of being on the receiving end of the fastest serve ever recorded in a match at the U.S. Open, served by Andy Roddick and clocked at 152 miles an hour, during the first round of the U.S. Open in 2004. In June 2006, Jenkins nearly qualified for his first appearance at Wimbledon, but was narrowly defeated in the 3rd qualifying round by Joshua Goodall in a four-set match that featured three tie-breakers.
