The scout is a character class in the Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 edition roleplaying game that was introduced in the Complete Adventurer.
A scout has been called "a rogue of the wilderness". Thematically the scout is an expert at tracking, scouting enemy positions, and finding their way through familiar and unfamiliar landscapes.
Mechanically the class is similar to the rogue. It gives up some urban abilities, and its skirmish power works differently than the sneak attack ability of the rogue; a Scout has the potential to do extra dice of damage and gains an armor bonus on any round when it moves. This supports the image of them as a mobile combatant and helps differentiate them from the rogue (and various rogue variants that have been presented over the years).
No currently published race has Scout as a favored class.
With the release of the Player's Handbook II, a new ability is available to the scout, as well as several roleplaying options. In return for sacrificing the skills fast movement and evasion, a scout can become a Dungeon Specialist, gaining a bonus to climbing skill and armor class under certain conditions. Roleplaying suggestions include character themes, suggested backgrounds, and personality archetypes.
