Scotts Valley High School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Scotts Valley High School (SVHS) is a public high school located in Scotts Valley, California. It was founded in 1999 and is a part of the Scotts Valley Unified School District, which is in Santa Cruz County. It has recently been afflicted by several issues.

As of May 2006, 100% of the original staff from 1999 has resigned from teaching, citing lack of district support as a key element. The school has also battled such PR problems, such as in 2005 when an SVHS parent filed a complaint against the high school for alledgedly promoting a "gay agenda." [1] Several parents and students claim they felt uncomfortable with the way homosexuality was promoted at the high school, but defenders claim there is no gay agenda or promotion of homosexuality, but simply that they have a tolerance for all sexual orientations. The specific evidence in question was the existence of pro-tolerance posters hanging around campus bearing the widely accepted symbol of gay culture, a pink triangle. In addition, roughly one-fourth of the classrooms of the campus were closed, and remain closed to this day, due to a mold infestation. The school has no plans to rebuild, or remove the mold.[2]

[edit] Athletics

SVHS sports teams are very well regarded in the SCCAL. A roller hockey team was developed by two students, and helped create a high school league. Scotts Valley also had a standout track and field team, which placed at the top of the league in the 2004, 2005, and 2006 seasons. Much of the track teams success can be attributed to the relay team comprised of team captain Colin "Gerb" Gerber, co- captain Richard "Chard" Fillman, Ben Mullen and Joe Lutrell. The members of this team combined hold over half of the school records and qualified for many elite meets, including the Central Coast Section finals. The Football team is coached by the schools Athletic Director Louie Walters. The baseball team is coached by the former Giant minor league standout Giuseppe Chiaramonte.[3]
