The school grew from an existing successful one year foundation course based at Dundee College which was started in 1991 by lecturer Peter Royston. Due to a lack of provision in Scotland and a desire of Scottish students to train in Scotland a second and third year of training were added in 1998 and 1999. A successful bid to the National Lottery allowed the college to build a atate of the art facility at it's Kingsway campus , comprising dance studios and a theatre. College also successfully applied for a dance Artist from The Scottish Arts Council to develop a community programme which would utilise the facilities at non training times. Market research was undertaken to determine the potential for a small touring venue. The beginning of the school in the new building called THE SPACE began in 2001 and THE SPACE was officially opened by Her Majesty THE QUEEN as part of Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002.Director of the school Peter Royston , following a career as dancer and choreographer with The Scottish Ballet and as dance Artist for The Borders Region has developed the school to offer a training to professional level focussing on technique in Graham,Cunningham and release with a strong Ballet development.
