Scott La Rock

Scott Sterling (March 2, 1962August 27, 1987), better known by his stage name Scott La Rock, was the original DJ for the hip hop group Boogie Down Productions. Sterling, a social worker, met KRS-One in 1986 at Covenant House, a group home in the Bronx, where KRS-One was staying. In Sterling's spare time, he DJed at local functions. Together with MCs KRS-One and D-Nice, he formed the Boogie Down Productions crew. Their debut album, Criminal Minded was an instant hit and has appeared on several "greatest albums" lists.

La Rock was shot to death in 1987 while attempting to break up a fight involving BDP colleague D-Nice. Though La Rock's death could have meant the end of BDP, the group decided to continue without him.

One result of La Rock's death was KRS's transformation into a more thoughtful artist who continually spoke out against violence in the ghetto (e.g., Stop the Violence on BDP's album By All Means Necessary). KRS-One still makes regular respectful references to the deceased La Rock. Notably, KRS-One's latest album Live is credited as being "Overseen by Scott La Rock".

People have been calling him one of the best producers of the rap/hip-hop game. On the Krs-one retrospective cd, the last song, bdp-ism is the last song that Scott la Rock produced before his death in 1987.
