Semicassis granulata granulata |
The Scotch Bonnet or Ridged Bonnet (IPA: [ˈskatʃ boˈnei]) is a seashell. Its scientific identification is listed as Semicassis granulata granulata, Phalium granulatum or Phalium (Bezordicella) granulatum granulatum. The shell was first identified in 1778 and is found along the Atlantic coast of the Americas from the southeast United States to Brazil.
The shell itself is classified as a helmet shell. It often grows to as large as 4 inches in length. The shell is created by a species of sea snail and is extremely fragile. An intact Scotch Bonnet is a rare find for a beachcomber. The shell is ridged and white or cream-colored with blocks of brown or yellow.
It is the state shell of North Carolina.
