Scopelosaurus ahlstromi is a waryfish of the family Notosudidae, found in all oceans, at depths of down to 500 m. Its length is between 15 and 25 cm.

Scopelosaurus ahlstromi is a small slender deepwater species with a high first dorsal fin and an adipose second dorsal fin. The snout is pointed and the eyes are disproportionately large.

Body colour is brilliant silver on the flanks with opalescent belly scales.
