Schweppes (brand)

For an overview of the Schweppes family of businesses, see Cadbury-Schweppes.

Schweppes brand beverages, sold around the world, include a variety of carbonated water and ginger ales. Its marketing campaign made heavy use of an onomatopoeia in their commercials: "Schhhhh.... Schweppes," after the sound of the gas escaping as you open the bottle.

In the late eighteenth century, Jean Schweppe, a watchmaker and amateur scientist developed a process to manufacture carbonated mineral water. He founded the Schweppes Company in Geneva in 1783, but later moved to London to develop the business there.

Schweppes tonic water is one of Schweppes's products. It is somewhat bitter and lemony in taste and contains quinine, although at such a small dosage, the Tonic part of the "Tonic Water" really means nothing.
