Schreiber is known for the high academic standings of its students as well as the awards they receive in numerous competitions.

Schreiber's Academic Decathlon team was New York State's winning team from 1997-2004. They placed second in 2005, their first time not attending the national competition in eight years.

Schreiber also has nationally recognized research programs including, Science Research, Math Research, and Social Science research. There have been numerous local and national winners from the school that have participated in the Intel Science Talent Search competition.

Paul D. Schreiber High School produced eight Intel Science Talent Search semifinalists for the spring of 2006, tying for second place of the total number of semifinialists in the nation with Stuyvesant High School of Manhattan. The achievement of the semifinialists marks the fourth consecutive year that Schreiber High School has been in the top five schools in the United States. Schreiber has also produced one finalist in the competition, who is one of only 40 in the entire country to participate.

[edit] School Publications

One of Schreiber's publications is The Schreiber Times. The newspaper includes sections about Arts and Entertainment, Opinions, Features, News and Sports. It has won awards for each of its five sections from well-acclaimed sources, including the Long Island newspaper, Newsday. In spite of its success, the Times has been criticised for focusing on trivial issues. The focus on such issues can be seen in the titles of articles such as "The Motorola Cellphone" and "From Costumized to Clique: Halloween Costumes," both from its October 2005 issue, as a result of its policy of reporting on only school-related stories. However such articles are part of a uniform effort by staff and supervisors to "Schreiberize" its articles. Still, criticism yielded an alternative school paper.

A lesser known and read, more politically oriented zine called Common Sense was produced briefly from second semester of the 2003-2004 school year, until the first semester of the 2005-2006 school year. The founders of the publication maintained the purpose of Common Sense was to educate an otherwise apathetic student body about global and domestic issues. Differences in the direction of Common Sense after the graduation of its founding members led to a cease of its production. One issue of Common Sense ran an article that was perceived as being anti-gay, which received a lot of criticism.
