Schooner Jenny

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The "Jenny" was a schooner that became frozen in an ice-barrier of the Antarctic Circle in 1823. The ship was discovered by Captain Brighton of the ship "Hope" on September 22nd, 1860, after being locked in the ice for 37 years. The party that boarded the ship found the last log entry by the captain, which read:

"May 4, 1823. No food for 71 days. I am the only one left alive."

The cold had preserved the ship. The captain was found sitting in a chair with the pen still in his hand. The Schooner Jenny had seven people aboard, including one woman and a dog.

Australian poet Rosemary Dobson wrote about in her poem "The Ship of Ice" published in her The Ship of Ice with other poems in 1948. She won a Sydney Morning Herald poetry price for her work. (Rosemary Dobson "Contemporary Authors Online" Galenet 2001 accessed 22 April 2006)
