Schonell Theatre
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Schonell Theatre is a mid-sized, single auditorium theatre capable of hosting projected cinematic films, musical performances, plays and lectures. It is situated in the UQ Union complex at the University of Queensland's St Lucia campus. The theatre was constructed in 1970 and underwent refurbishment in 2005. It is owned and operated by the UQ Union.
While the theatre is primarily used for the display of alternative and foreign motion pictures, the facility has been used since its refurbishment for day time lectures for subjects at the University of Queensland. It is also the current home of the Brisbane Gang Show.
The Schonell Theatre also is home to a gourmet pizza café and the Cement Box Theatre.
Due to lack of funding for the UQ Union under voluntary student unionism, as well as low attendance rates, the Schonell ceased regular cinema operations in mid-2006. [1] The theatre is used for university lectures and is available for booked special screenings and live events. During the second half of 2006 the Cement Box Theatre continued to host theatre productions, including the University of Queensland Law Revue.
