Schmerikon is a municipality near Rapperswil, Switzerland. It is located on the north bank of the lake of Zurich and has a population of about 3,300 (in 2003). There are just over 1300 households in Schmerikon. In the local dialect it is called Schmerike.
The area is 4.15km², a great amount of which is forest. A large area is natural reservate, particularly along the lake shore. The municipality is located at 408 meters above sea- level.
This town is also famous for its local bakery, Tschirky's, for which people travel up to 30 minutes by train to visit.
The main train that goes past Schmerikon is the Voralpen Express, which is commonly used as the second train when people wish to travel from Zurich to Schmerikon (the interchange is at Rapperswil).
The main bank in this small town is "Bank Linth". The two main supermarkets are both located a 5 minute walk away from the train station, which is also the town centre.
For entertainment, youths generally travel 5 minutes by train to Uznach, where there is a cinema. If people wish to go out, there are many fancy restaurants (such as Terra Kota) and many fast food stalls (such as the Schmerikon Kebab)
