Schizophonic was the first solo album by pop singer Geri Halliwell after her split from popular girl group the Spice Girls. The term schizophonic is a portmanteau of the Greek words schizo "split, divide" and phonic "sound". The "word" could be translated as "shattered sound".
Three of the four singles from the album went to #1 in the United Kingdom The other single made #2. The album was a commercial success selling 2.5 million copies around the globe. This album actually sold better than "Forever", the Spice Girls album that was released after Geri's departure from the group. "Schizophonic" had double the sales of "Forever" in the UK and in the US.
The album debuted at #4 in the United Kingdom, selling 31,274 in its first week, and 483,419 in total, being certified 2x Platinum for shipments of 600,000 copies.
In Canada, the album débuted and peaked at a disappointing #15 (her last album with the Spice Girls, Spiceworld débuted at #2). But, long-term sales were strong and the album was certified Platinum with just over 100,000 copies shipped.
In the United States, the album faced medium success, selling 40,000 copies in its first week debuting and peaking at #42 on the Billboard Hot 200 (still the strongest Spice Girls solo showing on the chart). Eventually, the album was certified Gold in 2001 with shipments of 500,000 copies.
The album also was certified Gold in Australia, Spain and Mexico with sales over 35,000, 40,000 and 100,000 respectively. However, the album only reached #85 in Japan, selling 3,190 copies.
